GUARDIANS of CLAPTON COMMON

THE HACKNEY HECKLER | 14.06.2004 18:14 | Free Spaces | Indymedia | London

CLAPTON COMMON IS BY FAR THE DIRTIEST FILTHIEST COMMON IN THE LONDON BOROUGH OF HACKNEY.
WE NEED TO EDUCATE THE OFFENDERS WHO CONTINUE TO DROP LITTER DUE TO THEM HAVING LITTLE REGARD FOR OTHER USERS OF A FREE GREEN OPEN SPACE....

I am appalled and disgusted everytime I walk off my estate and see the state of Clapton Common across the road and how certain members of the public abuse this green open space by dumping their litter and other objects into the pond and surrounding area.

There are exactly 30 litter bins on the common and 16 of these surround the pond alone, they are emptied on a regular basis by employees of the parks department/Hackney Council yet some individuals think its alright to ruin this space for other users by littering the whole place up with empty beer cans, plastic cider bottles, glass bottles and other litter.

There has been an increase of street drinkers in this area since Hackney Council introduced the exclusion orders on street drinking in the following areas, Hackney Town Hall, Mare Street E8, The Narroway, St Johns Church Yard, Clapton Square, and Clapton Pond and so the problem hasn't gone away, its just moved to the other end of the borough.

We now have the problem here on Clapton Common and on Amhurst Parade, Stamford Hill N16 yet none of our councillors seem to botherd about the increase of street drinking in the area, I wouldn't mind if people drank where they liked as long as they kept the place tidy, but they don't and they don't seem to have any consideration for anyone but themselves.

There have been broken bottles found on the common and a number of children have ended up with a nasty cuts including my own daughter, yet the council will do nothing and the parks employees who actually do a great job are the ones who take all the flack.

On speaking to a number of the parks employees last week I found out that the majority of the equipment used by them is either broken down or faulty with maybe a bolt needing replaced yet they have to go thrrough all the pen pushers to get anything done which can sometimes take up to 9 months to sort out because nobody in management takes a blind bit of notice.

I even had a chat with one of the councillors from the Springfield Ward outside my estate about the condition of Clapton Common and the fool said he didn't know where Clapton Common was, so I pointed across the road as he had his back to it at the time.

These people are elected to represent those residents in the ward they've been elected to and yet this one idiot didn't have a clue where the common was so due to his incompetence I asked him if he'd been living under a stone?
He wasn't amused and neither was I as I have had enough of taking my children out to play in a heap of litter left behind by people with no regard for anyone else.

Its not like I could take my children down to Springfield park playground, the place is in a bigger mess than the common with needles/spikes left behind by drug users and there are signs in that playground telling peole not to use any of the equipment there as it dangerous.

While out on Friday last I watched as one drinker sitting on a bench finished his bottle, and instead of dropping it in the bin not five feet from him, he threw the bottle up in the air and on landing it smashed on the tarmac surrounding the pond and sat there having a great laugh about it while parents had their children over there playing.

This forced me into doing something about it and so I returned to my estate and asked our estate cleaner if I could use his litter picker device and returned to the common to clear up all the broken bottles, cans and other rubbish that others to stupid to use a litter bin had left behind and while I was there a number of elderly folk told me I was wasting my time, its like everyone has given up or couldn't give a toss about that open green space and I stated thinking well at least by picking up the broken bottles I was making a difference to one child so they didn't fall over and cut themselves.

The result of all this is that I would like to set up a community based organisation with the name Guardians of Clapton Common to make certain that Clapton Common can be a place for everyone to enjoy, a place that is free from litter bugs and a pond where the wildlife in it can swim about without having bottles or cans thrown at them.

I appeal to anyone who has spare tools, brooms etc or anyone with any free time to get on board and show this council how real professionals who love and enjoy green open spaces can by working together change things for the better for each and everyone of us.

If anyone person or organisation would like to get involved in a massive clean up project they can give Patrick a call on 07973 536 682 or e,mail  notorious.heckler@btopenworld.com

I like the above article and have seen the state of Clapton Common myself, it really is in a mess and due to a few mindless thugs throwing bottles at the bird life in the pond, I've seen a few dead birds floating there.

Are you the bloke who was on the common the other day with his daughter who lost his rag at some people when their teenage kids threw a bottle at a few of the ducklings?
I truly can sympathise with you over your frustration and anger, but you really should try and simmer down mate.

I'm not having a go at you and I think what your trying to do is a good thing for those who use the common who don't litter the place up, I have seen numerous glass bottles all over the place there and have felt like saying something but I'm not as big as you and you seem to be well able to handle yourself.

I saw you having a go at the bloke who threw the bottle up in the air and heard him saying it wasn't your job to tell him what to do, I did laugh a little at what you said to him when you said "Your to fucking stupid to hold a job" I really did want to speak to you but thought it unwise at the time in case you thought I was a litter bug and had a verbal slagging match with me.

I really was overwhelmed when you left the common and returned some ten minutes later with that device for picking up litter and proceeded to go around the pond and the rest of the common picking up the beer cans and bottles, respect to you mate.

Why don't you pop down to 124 Lea Bridge Road and have a chat with the people from the European Creative Forum as they'd be well up for helping you out on the common and they have the tools and equipment to do it and the next time I'm on the common I'll come over and have a chat.

All the best

Steve.

GETTING INVOLVED

15.06.2004 09:34

My name is Sarah and I live on the Broad Common Estate by Oldhill street and I totally agree with you that Clapton Common is a right filthy place right now, I've complained to local councillors at there surgeries held on Webb Estate on the first and third Sunday of each month but all they actually did was to put up a barrier surrounding the pond about 6 to 8 months ago after a similar campaign. I spoke to Eric Ollorenshaw the conservative councillor for Springfield ward, but clearly he had the attitude of someone who'd been defeated. How can this man represent Londoners on the London assembly if he can't even represent the views of local people in Springfield ward? I agree with you Heckler that something must be done quickly otherwise Clapton Common will end up being a dumping ground for anyone who wants to get rid of their rubbish. I know there are people locally who want to do something about it but need some incentive to get them out doing it as many feel that its a losing battle, everytime you do a litter pick they'll always be some twat throwing more of it down. I agree with the above comment made by Steve that what your doing is a good thing and I believe that if you do lose your temper with anyone dumping over there you may end up in a fight and end up being arrested and then you fail in what you originally set out to do. These litter bugs need to be educated about what litter bins are usually there for and I feel it needs a large team of dedicated members of the public to do a massive sweep of the whole common while those who continue to dump their crap all over the place are there, name and shame the lot of em I say and I hope to meet you at the Springfield Park users group meeting on Sunday next as I've heard from a number of the parks staff who know you that you will not let this go so if ewe can get something constructive going at this meeting on Sunday, I'm sure others will be with you out there on thew common making the place family friendly/elderly friendly and get rid of those who really have no consideration for others.

Has anything happened since last summer?

I am a toy yacht enthusiast and I'm interested in the history of this innocent non-fish-annoying hobby. I own a fine postcard of Clapton Common pond taken in about 1910, showing people all round the pond and 3 or 4 yachts on the water, and no litter that I can see.

I was pleased to find out recently that there is still water in this pond (a lot have been filled in) but sorry to read that it's in a mess. I was hoping to add it to a website (noted above) of boat ponds that still exist, so I'm planning to toddle along and take photographs.

There seems to be a flurry of comment about Clapton Common in summer 2004 but nothing since. Has anything happened?
