New Squatted Social Centre in Kentish Town

The Wombles | 05.03.2004 09:14 | London

Barricades and Scaffold do not make a social centre!
Thats why we have decided to expand the social centres project beyond the walls of 93 Fortess Road, and have occupied number 156 - 156 Fortess Road. A truly amazing space, the story is the same as 93 Fortess Road - disused, empty and left in neglect. Since two weeks now we have been cleaning, scrubbing, mopping and dusting ready for the opening night of a new social centre project.

As we keep up the resistance at 93 Fortess Road (the barricades are still up!), we continue our common project and have a list of weekend events. We hope, even more now, that people which had enjoyed, participated and enageged with 93 Fortess Road will support this new initiative. Here are the list of events:

Friday March 5th
5pm: Opening afternoon
Full functioning cafe serving the most liberated coffee from the Zapatistas
8.00pm: Anti-Copyright Cinema continues!
Pizzeria will be up and running all night - choose your own toppings!

Saturday March 6th
Evening event: Anti-repression night: Simon Chapman (wombles/occupied social centre) talks about the events of june, last year when he was arrested, beatened up and fitted-up by greek police during a demonstration in Thessaloniki, Greece. He talks about his experiences, spending 6 months in Greek jail and 54 days on hunger strike with 4 other comrades.

Guy Smallman (NUJ freelance photograper) was shot in the leg by swiss police during the demonstrations in Geneva against the G8. He speaks also about Martin Shaw, an activist living in Spain who abseiled down the Aubonne Bridge during the same week of protests, only to have his safety rope cut by police and falling causing severe damage to his back and legs. These talks will be followed by films and questions and answers.
Pizzeria will be up and running all night - choose your own toppings!

Monday March 8th
International Womens Day. 3pm: Noise demonstration outside Holloway Prison. Many women are held their due debt and exploitation. Watch out for more details.

5pm: Womens Day Cafe

Film screenings, Cafe and a discussions on prisons and why they exist. All these events are open to both men and women. We want to make this social centre more friendly to kids of all ages and families. We therefore will be having a no smoking space for kids and parents at all public events.

Volunteers: We need people to help out. No matter how little time you have to give we need people to help serving coffee, in the kitchen and cleaning up. Pop in and put your name and contact down for a shift. Also pick up leaflets to distribute in your schools, colleges, workplaces and local area.
