I just saw the Friday evening Panel Discussion, and it was packed with people!!
27.09.2003 03:05
The panel was chaired with skill by Bruce Kent (MAW, CND, Pax Christi). The panel included Haifa Zangana (Act Together), Neera (Hands Up For Peace - schoolchildren national campaign), Ambuka (USAF/RAF Fairford peace camp), and an American grassroots activist Michael Zmolek (US Network to End the War Against Iraq). Great presentations, great questions from the audience, great responses from panelists. Audience members seemed to represent a very wide cross-section of the anti-war/peace movement. Audience members I met included the Green MEP Caroline Lucas, students, a former Iraq Peace Team member, and people who had travelled from as far away as Wales and Yorkshire for the conference. People seemed to appreciate having a nearby crashpad accomodation provided by the conference organisers for a minimal price (£2/3 I think).
The evening ended with an auction of items that were brought to the UK from Iraq in a Voices in the Wilderness UK sanctions breaking trip last year. I think two postcards went for £6! People were in good spirits and lingered to talk afterwards until the room had to be cleared in order for the custodian to close the building.
It was a great way for the conference to start. If the Friday turnout is indicative of how the turnout on Sunday will be, then we can expect 250 people to participate in the day of plenary discussions and workshops. I can't wait.
