Green election campaign in Redditch

North Worcestershire Green Party | 16.01.2010 05:16 | Climate Chaos | Birmingham

Fed up with conventional politics and looking for an alternative, Kevin White, an activist in Redditch, joined the Green Party 2 years ago. Now, he's been selected as the town's Green candidate for the General Election. The former Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, is the town's current MP. Launching his election campaign, Kevin has pledged to fight the seat on a broad range of issues, everything from public services, social justice & civil liberties, to peace, animal rights, democracy & of course, the environment.

WEBSITE LAUNCH KICKS OFF GREEN PARTY GENERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN IN REDDITCH

A new website has marked the launch of the Green Party's general election campaign in Redditch. Kevin White has been selected as the Green Party's candidate & he's looking forward to the campaign ahead. His website details the party's policies & a range of ways local residents can support the election campaign.

Support for the local Green Party gained a massive boost last year when Green candidates stood in the local elections across Redditch. In the county council election, 16.6% of voters in the Arrow Valley West division cast a vote for Kevin and there were similar results across the town.

Kevin White said: "Like my parents and grandparents before me, I've lived in Redditch all my life, so I'm passionate about the town. I'm interested in all political issues but there's one more than most which requires urgent action.

"Most people know it is time to get really serious about climate change and we only have a short space of time to act. I want to show people that a greener future is not about misery and sacrifice but a better quality of life.

"The Green Party want to create a million new jobs in green industries, improve public transport making it more reliable, convenient & cheaper and support small, local businesses, boosting the local economy.

"Politicians have finally woken up to the seriousness of climate change but when it comes to implementing the right policies, they are saying one thing and doing another"."

Kevin joined other Redditch residents and up to 50,000 campaigners from across the UK on a march through London in December. The biggest environmental march ever staged in the UK was dubbed 'The Wave' and marked the start of the Climate Summit which ended 2 weeks later in dismal failure.

Kevin commented: "The lack of success in Copenhagen means that we need redoubled efforts in 2010 to reach a real agreement. World leaders produced an empty accord which was not fair, not ambitious and not legally binding.

"Despite the obvious disappointment, in one sense we now have good reason to be optimistic as it seems highly likely that within months, the Green Party will achieve a major breakthrough and gain our first seats in parliament.

"For anyone concerned about the future of the planet, or the current state of politics in general, these are worrying but also very exciting times."
