Manchester May Day Festival

For once, the May Day Festival was more than the traditional march followed by a rally with platform speakers. There was a march, but it was followed by an all day festival with 15 workshops, 2 films and evening entertainment, at Manchester Mechanics Institute.

The workshops included NUJ journalists talking about reporting from war zones; Thompsons solicitors and Greater Manchester Hazards campaign on health and safety at work; regional inequality and how to change it; the battle against welfare reform; opposing TTIP; and international trade union organisation. There were two unexpected ones, the Lancashire Anti Fracking Campaign and the People's Assembly, which with the help of a TV scriptwriter put together a protest play which they performed at the end of the afternoon. These two, plus the welfare reform workshop, were a welcome element of diversity among the more traditional trade union movement workshops. They encouraged more women, non-working people and younger activists with no experience of union organisation to take part.
