Whilst some might view the disintegration of the EDL as a positive step for British politics, the wholesale departure of entire divisions to the steadfast white supremacist territory of the National Front (northern and southern sectors) should set alarm bells ringing for antifascists. Once the dodo of the British far right, the NF are increasing their grass roots recruitment.
Arising from the British Union of Fascists, the National Front are Britain's longest running neo-nazi group. The wholesale defection of the entire Thanet EDL Division should be of major concern to antifascists everywhere. While on a whole, the amount of so-called "footsoldiers" on the streets is decreasing, the bolstering of hardline fascist orgs like the NF must not go unwatched and unmonitored by antifascists everywhere, be they the UAF or ANTIFA.
The danger posed by 14 words white power maniacs like the National Front should not be underestimated, as a street force of thugs, willing to target socialist and trade union events as much as mosques. Whilst they are a joke on the ballet box, and have not got the mass street following of the EDL, they are more than capable of causing problems on the streets.
The National Front's willingness to be the bootboys for UKIP is a wake-up call for antifascist campaigners not to be complacent. Yorkshire EDL will follow.
