radical Bookfair Hamburg | 30.07.2014 19:20 | Analysis | Culture | Education

We are inviting people who are interested in having a table/stall (booksellers, publishers, zine distros, independent presses and political groups) or holding a workshop (current political issues, book talks, skill-shares, networking meetings etc.) to help create an exciting, interesting and forward-thinking event in Hamburg this autumn.

Call-out for the first Radical Bookfair, Hamburg, Germany – 4-5 October 2014

What we are aiming for:
The first of its kind in Hamburg, the Radical Bookfair will take place on the weekend of 4-5 October 2014.
We are aiming to bring together people from Hamburg, Europe, and hopefully other parts of the world in one weekend, in one place, for the bookfair. If you can't make it to Hamburg, we would also welcome literature/stuff for a stall that we can put out for donations (and we will try and help with postage costs). We welcome texts and ideas for workshops in all languages, and will try and facilitate translation when its needed.

We feel it is important to link our struggles and campaigns, across Europe and elsewhere, and are asking for people to bring their ideas and infomaterials, books, flyers, invitations zines and workshop ideas. We are planning the whole weekend, including a Saturday night concert, so hopefully people can meet up and talk informally as well, after attending the workshops.

Why Hamburg? Why now?
Hamburg has been in the media spotlight over the last year due to its city-wide, increasingly militant and active campaigns. The city has recently seen eruptions of street-actions and demonstrations, ranging from the huge campaign for the rights of the Lampedusa-in-Hamburg group, to the 'Take-Back-the-Night' feminist demonstration, the ongoing battle to save the Rote Flora squat and many others.

There is no doubt that the city has the potential to really come alive during moments of struggle, and one of the aims of the Radical Bookfair is to bring together the street-spirit shown throughout the city with reflections on the books, texts, literature and ideas that have historically inspired and continue to inspire social movements and political struggles today. The intention is to frame what happens in the city within the wider European picture, a space to come together to share and discuss the ideas and inspirations of radical resistance, to learn, reflect and organise over a weekend of talks, workshops, films, music and BOOKS!

What we are asking for:
Closer to the event, people will be needed to help with the general running of the weekend, e.g. helping with the cooking groups, facilitation of workshops, translation etc. so if you are willing to contribute a few hours of your time please get in touch.

Although only in the beginning-stages of planning at the moment, the intention is to be able to help cover travel costs as much as possible to those who require it. We will also try and offer as many places to sleep as we can. Please include in your email if you and/or your group need these.
Also, of course, let us know if you have money you would like to donate to the organisation of the bookfair.

Flyers and posters with more information will be sent after the initial programme, including the Saturday party, is organised. Let us know if you can distribute these in your areas!

We really look forward to hearing from you, and welcome your ideas!
See you there!
