Who is Sanaz?
Sanaz’s struggle began in August 2011, after the unjust revocation of her PhD candidacy, tuition fees and maintenance scholarship by the University of Leeds’ Institute of Communication Studies. Specialising in researching the Iranian diaspora, Sanaz is a published author who for the past three years has been embroiled in an internal dispute between herself, and the University of Leeds.
What is Sanaz’s struggle?
Since the ICS’s dismissal of Sanaz, she has been experiencing little support from her student union representatives, despite facing homelessness, destitution and deteriorating health. She has galvanised support from four Student Unions University of Bristol, University of Bradford, Royal Holloway and University of London. Sanaz’s PhD candidacy was revoked without good reason- the ICS failed to adhere to the guidelines set forth in the University of Leeds Student Research Handbook. It is actions like these that are symptomatic of institutional racism in the neoliberal university system, which Sanaz is hoping to eventually bring to judicial review.
A recent piece from Amrit Wilson in Ceasefire magazine sets more context of Sanaz’s cause and campaign: http://tinyurl.com/l9fgeuy
Sanaz’s campaign could not survive without publicity to galvanise support. For this reason, Justice 4 Sanaz is calling out for a voluntary film-maker in or around the Leeds area who would be willing to feature Sanaz’s campaign in a short film.
If you think this could be you, please do not hesitate to get in touch!
