Organising for Abolition: Skill Sharing Weekend

Empty Cages Collective | 05.05.2014 10:15 | Policing | Repression | Social Struggles

How can we build a movement for prison abolition in the UK? How can we build literacy and understanding around terms like ‘prison abolition’ and ‘prison industrial complex’? How do we do this work with those healing from prison and create a supportive culture of care and solidarity? How do we do this work with people completely new to radical politics or alternative thinking?

This weekend is a chance for people from around the UK to come together to explore, create and critique how we can work together for prison abolition.

We will explore language, popular education tools and practices, community organising and more.

Where: St Werburghs Community Centre, Bristol

When: Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th May 2014, 10 – 4pm

Logistics: Unfortunately we cannot financially support everyone with travel costs, however if you get in touch soon enough we can do our best. We can source sleeping space for people to stay in Bristol. There is room for about 25 people max & we welcome a diversity of people to make it happen.

Please email us ASAP beforehand so we can collectively design the weekend together –  info@prisonabolition.org

How can you do it?

FIRST (before you say anything else) you need to come up with constructive and effective proposals for what to do with all the rapists, murderers and psychopaths out there

You assume that society needs prisons, we do not. 90% of those inside are no threat to society and the remaining 10% of limited threat. The 10% can be monitored by the local community and the 90% simply set free to return to their lives and contribute to society.

Try thinking a little outside of the norms of the Daily Mail.

common sense

Was that meant to be a serious response to 'Denise' or are you just joking around now? You believe that armed robbers, murderers and rapists can be "monitored by the local community" and don't need to be in prison?

Is it your position that crimes should not be punished? Or do you have an alternative punishment in mind to replace prisons? If you have no punishment isn't it quite obvious that people will rape, steal and so on as much as they like since there would be no consequences?

Also why do you accuse anyone who disagrees with you or asks a question of being a Daily Mail reader?

>> My response was serious and sensible. I am sorry you found the concepot too difficult to understand.

You believe that armed robbers, murderers and rapists can be "monitored by the local community" and don't need to be in prison?

>> Yes, why don't you ?

Is it your position that crimes should not be punished?

>> Depends on the 'crime'

Or do you have an alternative punishment in mind to replace prisons?

>> Yes, see my previous post.

If you have no punishment isn't it quite obvious that people will rape, steal and so on as much as they like since there would be no consequences?

>> We have a greater faith in humankind, it's a shame you do not.

Also why do you accuse anyone who disagrees with you or asks a question of being a Daily Mail reader?

>> If it quacks like a duck.... etc
