Elephant day was celebrated in wayanad with elephants treated to a sumptuous feast.The elephants were given coconut, sugarcane bananas and cucumber as part from the daily ration of wheat ragi and jaggery.The objective behind celebrating elephant day is to create awareness among the public on the importance of elephant in the animal kingdom and how to conserve this big animal according to deputy range officer wayanad wild life sanctuary anilkumar Elderly tribal mahouts were honoured on the occasion .They performed a gaja puja in connection with anayootu. A bird watching competition for students were held as part of the programme.Around 400 participants including students environmentalists and wild life enthusiasts took part in the programme.
