Pathriramanal island in alapuzha in kollam and kalasamala kunnu in thrissur are expected to be declared as bio diversity heritage sites by the govt of kerala. This tag is being provided for first time in the state.
In the kalasamala kunnu there are 100 trees which figure in the IUCN red list of endangered species existing in a marshy land. They form an exclusive ecosystem, as mangroves are spread over four acres in the banks of the ashtamudi lake.There are travencoricum trees and is home for 50 bird species,eight varieties of mangroves and 100 Non mangrove varieties.
The pathiramanal island in the vembanadu lake spread over 64 acres in muhamma panchayat is home to 88 species of birds,58 species of fish and 160 plant species. The tag is given to ecosystems with the consent of the residents as the conservation activities are undertaken with their cooperation.
