Repeal Schedule 7 – demo on Wednesday against “anti terror” detentions

Repeal Schedule 7 | 04.11.2013 18:22 | Policing | Repression | Terror War | London

Demonstration 10:00am, Wednesday 6th November outside the Royal Courts of Justice, The Strand, London WC2A 2LL

On Wednesday a high court judicial review will challenge the Metropolitan Police's use of Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act which enables the police to detain and interrogate anybody passing through the UK's ports and border crossings without any suspicion of them engaging in terrorist activity.

This has led to the high profile detentions of David Miranda (partner of Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald who published the NSA/GCHQ surveillance leaks) and human rights activist and anti drones campaigner Baraa Shiban, along with many lesser known but equally innocent activists and people of ethnic minorities. Muslims are disproportionately targeted by these searches.

Schedule 7 has been widely criticised by human rights NGOs including Amnesty International and Liberty. Nothing short of a repeal of Schedule 7 is acceptable in a fair and just society.

Join us outside the Royal Courts of Justice on Wednesday to demand an end to this abuse of legislation by those tasked to protect us.

We hope to have someone speaking about their first hand experience of being detained under Schedule 7.
