Me, Gilad Atzmon and the'Truth'

Housekeeping: This article is by an IMCista. It does not easily fit the Indymedia uk guidelines, but we did discuss it as a collective, and agreed it could be posted. I have put much thinking into its writing, and I am clearly identifiable as a result of putting so much of myself into it. It will make some people very uncomfortable and it is likely to generate some hostile responses and trolling. If people choose to troll or attack anonymously, they should expect their posts to be hidden. If people are disrespectful they should expect the same.
____________________________________________________Whilst thinking about the issues in this article, I also discussed it with some people. One person noted in a discussion that:
Feeling that you are set apart by historical experiences and by a sacred text can allow for that defensive feeling to seem justified.
It isn't a big step from realising that to realising that:
Understanding that you are set aside by historical experiences and by a sacred text can allow for that defensive feeling to be overcome.
I thank them for that, and ask that you think about this whilst trying to understand the points I have struggled to express here.
This piece could also have been called "We need to talk about (and with) Gilad."

Rodriguez (Searching for Sugarman)- Crucify Your Mind
Me:
I was born in Johannesburg, Apartheid South Africa in 1960. My mom was a trainee nurse and she met my dad while he was recovering from an accident in which he had lost a leg. She was 19, him 28 (I think). Before he left the hospital she was pregnant – with me. They tried to build a life together but it didn’t work out. When I was two and a half, he took a car out and put a hosepipe from the exhaust to the window. An aunt tells me she talked him out of taking me with him. It would have saved me much pain if she hadn't - conversely it would have caused others even more pain. Life is so complicated.
My dad's suicide led to me being put into the care system and being moved from pillar to post until shortly before I was 5 when I was adopted by a dysfunctional couple, as a substitute for the children they thought they couldn’t have. By this time, I was a very disturbed little boy and my adoptive father, who was an immigrant from the UK, thought he could beat the disturbance out of me. My mother egged him on – and I learnt to dislike her even more than I hated him...
The more he beat me, the more disturbed I became,
The more disturbed I became, the more he beat me
– how’s that for a vicious circle?
Here are two defining moments that spring out from the time I spent with them. (By the time I was 11 I was mainly back in institutions, and back to moving from pillar to post).
When I was around 8 or 9 I had cause to go to our maid’s room, which was about 15 yards from the adoptive folks' very comfortable and large suburban house outside of Durban. Her room was cramped, and blackened by candle smoke because she didn’t have electricity – it was furnished with cheap furniture and very little of it. I asked my adoptive Mother why our maid lived in such terrible conditions, and she replied:
“They have different needs to us.”
Even at that age I knew that was a blatant lie and thus I learned to question what was going on around me and came to an understanding that none of us should be treated as a lesser being, nor judged, nor subjected to abuse and poverty or even death because of who brought us into this world ………. Perhaps because of my own disturbance I was unable to muster the supremacist ego of the racists around me – and I was further marginalised for not being one of them…… It is one of the greatest tragedies of my life, that my birth brother, from whom I was separated in my toddler-hood, and only found again a quarter of a century later, did become one of them, and still is. I love him so dearly – but our political differences prevent us from enjoying each other.
A year or so later I had done something else ‘naughty’ and my father was punching and kicking me around my room.
Him: “What are you?”
Me: “I don’t know.” (He beats me for not knowing).
Him: “You’re a yellow liver bellied snake.” (He beats me for being this).
Him: “What are you?”
Me: “I’m a yellow liver bellied snake.”* (He beats me worse than before)...
Him: “No child of mine ever talks about themselves like that...”
(*This is why I don’t believe torture can ever do any good whatsoever)
This may help those of you who know me to understand more about the tortured, disturbed, sometimes shy, sometimes outrageous, difficult individual that I have grown to be. It may help you understand why I have problems forming attachments, building relationships, accepting authority and believing that the world is an okay place….. why I have spent the last decade mired in a deep depression from which I am still struggling (so far without any success whatsoever) to emerge.
“Smile they said, things could be worse, so I did and they were….”
One of my mantras
My experiences have led to me search for ways to build a better world – I was a liberal until I knew better – I believed that I could be part of changing the world into a better place – but the harder I tried the worse it seemed to become. I thought I had found a ‘spiritual home’ and a group I belonged to when I discovered Anarchism and Direct Action, but like all my relationships it became problematic as I discovered that this group too was riddled with hypocrisies, double standards and, as it turned out, a rather distorted sense of what freedom means……. The systemic problems of the society and system I live in were mirrored in the very group that was trying to free itself from them. As I think Kurt Vonnegut might say, “How do you like them apples?”
Gilad Atzmon and the 'Truth'
Gilad was a key part of accelerating that disenchantment – he has taught me so much and cost me so much…… I love him like the birth brother I am prevented from loving – although I have only met him a few times and we are in no sense close friends….. we too have political differences but at least we can try talking about them – and sometimes we even resolve them. Sometimes we tackle issues together – for most of the time I remain connected to him through his writings, which I read often – I must have read most of what he has written by now, and there is lots of it.
History is Myth
I understand that truth too is myth – even what we have seen with our own eyes, and experienced with our own lives, and which seems blatantly true to us, changes when we come to understand the motivations and reasons for the parts that other actors played in the event. It shifts as we learn more, and as we realise that our own issues have clouded our interpretation. Our culture, our upbringing and our personal pain all affect how we experience the world, and how we perceive it. I know this but Ali Abunimah, it seems, has yet to learn it….. as have others.
So, this is how I see Gilad and understand his work. It is part of an evolving view and it is possible that in time I may see it all completely differently. Gilad himself may identify with parts of it, and disagree with other parts. He may even help to change my view of him…… and maybe I can help change his view of him – all things are possible.
Like me, Gilad was born in an Apartheid society – in his case Israel. I should tell you that one of our key differences is around whether or not Israel is an Apartheid state – I am an Aye – he is a Nay. Unlike me, he bought into it as a kid. It was only when he was coming to the end of his time in the misleadingly named Israeli Defence Force, where he was a medic and musician, that he had cause to go to Lebanon and see the conditions that Palestinian prisoners were kept in. This led him to start questioning all that he had learnt and the society in which he grew up.
He left Israel and moved to Europe where he developed his music and also studied philosophy and did some training in psychotherapy. He found himself profoundly influenced by Otto Weineger, a disturbed and brilliant soul who wrote some disgusting stuff and killed himself at a very young age.
Influenced by Weineger, Gilad began examining himself – a process of looking into the mirror, and examining what he didn’t like about himself in minute detail. He came to think that Jewish identity was a part of his problem, and his study of this aspect of himself was further developed when he expanded his navel gazing to include a small but influential group of Jewish anti-Zionists, centred mainly in London where he also lives, and whom he publicly attacked after they (JAZ) started attacking a group whom he discovered were also critically exploring the issue of Jewish ideology, often in an very offensive and unpleasant way. The group included Paul Eisen and Israel Shamir. I am not very clear on how close they were, or the interactions between them, but it does seem that they were all influenced by each other, and learnt from each other.
Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long for accusations of anti-Semitism to start flying around – and for destruction to occur. The more the group developed their critique of Jewish Power, it seems the more Jewish Power was unleashed in an attempt to marginalise and destroy them. Gilad chose to face the onslaught full on, and despite serious attempts to marginalise and destroy him, he continues to develop his critique of them, their ideology and their power. He still works as an accomplished and popular Jazz musician and his writings are widely read – Erdogan even quoted him once which caused a major furore, and some respectable and respected individuals such as Richard Falk and Mearsheimer have been seriously attacked for coming out in support of his work. I too have been under sustained attack by Jewish anti-Zionists and Zionists alike.
The attempts to silence Gilad have been sustained and brutal, and it is difficult to read him if your introduction is the out of context snippets circulated with the intention of destroying him.
An example of this: I went to the launch of his book - and was met with the spectacle of folk I have been involved in BDS actions with, picketing the meeting and handing out a leaflet, written by arch rival Tony Greenstein which claimed to be snippets of the book (The wandering who says ….) They were not from the book at all. In order to attend the launch, I had to cross a picket line of people I have previously faced arrest with, and that pretty much ended my involvement as an activist who had been intensely involved in BDS Direct Actions. I now share many of Gilad’s reservations about, and critiques of BDS... although I continue to believe that every attempt should be made to isolate Israel as a brutal, Apartheid state.
Indymedia UK, a project I have a long association with, has been profoundly damaged by an insistence that it ban Atzmon, which didn't happen, partly because I opposed the demand. It seems to me that if Indymedia UK lived up to its own aims and intentions it would be a good forum for the debate he is trying to launch – but it proved to be moribund by its own inconsistencies, and has so far not been able to stand up to the attacks on it by Atzmon’s opponents.
Recently my attention has been mainly focused on the brutal attack on the poor in the UK, currently being orchestrated by the nasties in the coalition, and their dismantling of all that made Britain a bearable place to live for those like me who feel unable to cope in the countries of their birth. I haven’t been writing on Palestine, and haven’t been involved in activism around it. I avoid demos because of the intense victimisation I have suffered at the hands of the police – who have helped me understand that the police are the enemy of freedom, and that for as long as we have police we cannot be free.
I have been horrified by how muted the so-called radical Left’s response has been to these brutal attacks on our own society's most vulnerable. At times it has seemed as if I am back in an Apartheid state, with much of the left being in the position that Liberal white South Africans found themselves in – they knew it was wrong, but they were benefiting enough from it not to want seriously to destroy it. I have personally been affected by the cuts to services that have hindered my own attempts to free myself enough from my own disturbances and depression so that I can find a way of being in this world that allows to me function in a better way than I am able to now... In order that I don't spend much of my time wishing I could go to sleep and never wake up, or fighting strong suicidal impulses.
I am wondering if it is even possible to be well-adjusted in a maladjusted world. If being well-adjusted means accepting inequality and injustice and allowing it to flourish, then I guess my project is doomed to failure.
If you believe the hype about Atzmon, as represented by his rivals, then he aims to turn us all into jack-booted racists. I know enough about him to think this is preposterous, and I am beginning to believe that part of what makes them most uncomfortable and angry about him - all that he hates most about the way that his Jewish upbringing has affected him - makes them profoundly uncomfortable about themselves too because, when we are confronted with parts of ourselves that repulse us, we often lash out.
I do believe that Gilad is part of a much wider struggle towards a world where we can live in dignity, and at peace with one another – for a while he ended all his performances with “What a wonderful World”. In any case, any new and improved society will have to include all, including those who offend us, disturb us or are from the far Right, regardless of whether we like them or not.
At the least Atzmon opens a debate that I think needs to be had – and which has been censored at a major cost to many – but he has chipped away at it and it seems to me that the debate is beginning to open up.
Despite all the time I have spent reading Atzmon, and listening to him, and recording him, I still don’t hate anyone on the basis that their mother or father happened to be Jewish. In fact, some of the most influential and loved people in my life fall into that category. So if his opponents are right about his project then it appears to be a failed project.
If his project is the deJudaization of Atzmon, it too is doomed to failure because his upbringing is central to who he is now. But his argument that people need to find a way of understanding and reducing the influence of the environments we grew up in and relinquishing the identities foisted upon us by them, has some validity in it, and it does seem that an increasing number of Jews are starting to explore the path.
I am out of energy – follow the links if you want to know more – and read Atzmon if you are able to open your mind enough to hear what he has to say, or perhaps start by listening to his music. If you insist on judging him solely on what his opponents say, then you aren't going to be able to do it. And if you insist that you will only relate to me if I denounce him and stop reading his writings, then farewell until such time that you are ready to allow me the freedom to follow my own instincts and respect my right to live a life with as much integrity as I can muster.
I will end with one more part of my truth.
When I arrived at my adoptive home – having been stripped of my mother, my father, my brother, my home and my culture - they tried to rename me. Even at 5 I was stubborn enough to refuse to answer to the new name they wanted to foist onto me.
In my essence I am still that stubborn kid, who insists on being himself and I still thirst for a world which is propelled by a desire to meet need, not greed – where we do our utmost to ensure the dignity of all, and where we do not have states and corporations that rob so many of so much.
Maybe we’re part of the same struggle – but I have to do it my way - and that may sometimes make you uncomfortable. It certainly causes me great personal discomfort and costs me much.
If you read this far, I hope it has helped you understand some of the things I have done – and dispelled some of the preposterous myths about me (and, co-incidentally, Atzmon).
I thank you.

I really do appreciate Roy your intelligent appeal and the background of your life put on public display. That is a courageous thing to do. But the world has moved on from what has been in the past a totalitarian form of nationalism in which the only critical voice of Israel which is allowed, is Jewish!
That time has passed and I think people are now waking up to the fact the Zionist state of Israel is coming to an end.
Jewish supremacy was always a fraud. Most Jews I ever met, never gave two hoots about Israel.

Sadly people are still being banned from Palestine Solidarity activities in London and the UK, and pressure is still being exerted on people not to dare to read Atzmon.
See what is happening at Wikipedia right now - it is what prompted me to finally write the article.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard#Gilad_Atzmon
The Wikipedia community which is proudly 'NPOV' and 'fair' and 'balanced' is defending weasel words so that arch-rivals of Atzmon can score cheap political points. Yediot Aharonot, a Zionist rag is being defended as a 'Reliable Source'.
Atzmon has always been at pain to say that he is concerned with "3rd category Jews" ie " those who put their Jewishness over and above all of their other traits" - and has insisted that his problem is not with Judaism, nor with 2nd category Jews ie those who just happen to be Jewish, and yet it is presented as fact that he 'defines himself' as "a Jew against Judaism"
See more at: http://mwcnews.net/focus/politics/31570-mj-rosenberg.html#sthash.HijlRsz9.dpuf"
I had hoped that a Wikipedian who didn't have a 'conflict of interest' and valued the stated core values of Wikipedia would resolve the matter, but the weasel words are still up there.
And people like David Rovics are still being hounded:

It is true that many are overcoming the hurdles, but don't assume that everyone has achieved the leap that you have.

one question
26.09.2013 23:22
But there is a question you are still refusing to ask yourself, because you do not yet have the strength to.
I believe that one day you will.
What if it's the Palestinian solidarity movement who's right about Atzmon's conscious appeal to antisemitism, served with just enough plausible deniability to fool you? What if the great falling away from Atzmon isn't a Zionist plot but an honest revulsion? What if you discover you have refused with every ounce of your soul to even consider the possibility of the possibility -- because you clung to Atzmon, in desperation, like a log in the middle of the ocean of the world, and could not afford to question him as well?

One answer?
27.09.2013 03:23
I was tempted to hide your answer as disrespectful because you turn the strength it took to reveal so much about myself and my pain, into a weakness....... but I will let it stand. Be very careful to avoid being similarly disrespectful if you feel compelled to come back to this thread please.
I don't think there really is a great falling away from Atzmon - more people who actively care about the plight of the Palestinians read him than ever before, especially in the Middle East.. IMO the fall away is wishful thinking on your part, and wishful thinking on the part of the Jewish anti-Zionists who have had their cover blown by Atzmon in the eyes of so many.
There IS however a falling away in that section of the 'movement' where apparently the likes of Max Blumenthal and Ali Abunimah are regarded as self-declared 'leading lights' But at the same time, it seems to me, they have become so enmeshed with pushing a 2-state solution that I no longer regard them as part of any 'movement' which shows genuine solidarity with the dispossessed Palestinians in the refugee camps and in exile - the ones who insist on the right of return and flat out reject 2 states.
The Jewish anti-Zionist rivals of Atzmon are part of that sector, and I know that Landy found that some of them had joined the movement for reasons that were not primarily support for the Palestinians, but as part of an internecine struggle within the Jewish community. He explains it better than I do and you can listen to it here if you want it from the source: http://www.radio4all.net/responder.php/podcast/podcast.xml?uid=4235. They have insisted on dragging the PSC into that struggle.....
I do not believe that those who act as gatekeepers to drive away individuals who have proven their commitment to Justice for the Palestinians are really part of any genuine 'Solidarity Movement' , although I do believe that some of them are genuinely committed to this distorted movement that undermines the Palestinian cause in the name of solidarity with Palestinians. I fear that their primary motivation is to promote their own brand of sectarian politics, and it is sad they do this at the expense of those they claim to support. In the case of the Jewish anti-Zionists they insist on putting the struggle against anti-Semitism at the heart of the solidarity movement, and of turning the issue of Palestine into a Jewish matter with their Jews against Zionism Jews for Justice for Palestinians, J-Big groups, etc. They insist on determining who is, and is not a Palestinian solidarity activist, and clearly they are NOT themselves Palestinians..... Even their mate Ali Abunimah who clearly is Palestinian, has come dangerously close to actively promoting them and their agenda at the cost of the Palestinians I met in the refugee camps of Nablus and Gaza.
At no time in the struggle against South African Apartheid do I recall an Anti-Apartheid activist arguing for Bantustans - yet in the executive of the so-called Palestine Solidarity Campaign they do. Even worse, they have allowed themselves to be turned into the executioners for the Jewish-anti-Zionists - eg by expelling former PSC chair Francis Clark Lowes , so I discount them as well. So too the BDS activists I once worked closely with - because instead of fighting for the liberation of Palestine they are now resorting to picketing book launches with fraudulent leaflets on behalf of your pal Greenstein , expelling a man who has had the keys to the city of Gaza bestowed upon him by Gazans from a place they feel entitled to call Palestine Place - and where they insist that to gain admittance you must agree to support a 2 state solution. It is sad to see such behaviour being perpertrated in the name of the Palestinians - although I do not expect you as a Zionist to understand quite how devastating it is.
I have wondered whether Atzmon might suddenly expose himself as nothing but a racist - but 5 years later I am even more convinced that he is not - that he is genuine in trying to resolve his own personal dilemma, that he is an astute observer of how the Palestinian Solidarity Movement has been undermined, and that he is a true advocate of liberty and freedom, unlike his mealy-mouthed weasel worded Jewish anti-Zionist opponents, and their Zionist friends (such as yourself)
If Atzmon ever did the unspeakable, I would not hesitate to speak out about it - but 5 years down the line you are still reduced to almost admitting that you and your Jewish anti-Zionist mates have FAILED to prove that he is nothing but a cheap common Jew-hating racist (and I do realise its your way of continuing the attack on him and me)
Finally you conclude your multi-handed 'single' question with this line:
"What if you discover you have refused with every ounce of your soul to even consider the possibility of the possibility -- because you clung to Atzmon, in desperation, like a log in the middle of the ocean of the world, and could not afford to question him as well? "
Let me say first of all that I did not hesitate to indulge in very frank and public questioning of him over the matter of his definition of Apartheid, which I still disagree with. So, if I truly believed he had acted in a racist manner, I do not think I would hold back from confronting him with it. As I am not a Zionist, and am not acting as a tribalist, I am still able to admit that I am not always right, and I am increasingly able to try and make amends where I have got it wrong.
What you and your Jewish colleagues did - was to force me to align myself with Atzmon's views in order to defend the integrity of the stated editorial process of the Indymedia uk collective, which you as an IMCista from another country tried to subvert, , and which Greenstein attempted to over-ride by mustering a group of influential and well known Jewish anti-Zionists to crush, When he failed to do so, he resorted to publicly condemning me as an anti-Semite - and said he would only withdraw the accusation if I renounced Atzmon.
I wonder if you are capable of seeing that your own behaviour and that of your mate Greenstein was despicable, and that even if you did, whether you would be strong enough to admit it publicly.
My guess is no.
I hope that answers your question, and that you don't feel a need to return to this thread - because we have nothing in common and there is nothing we can constructively achieve together. You converted to Zionism and I reject that ideology as RACIST to the core.

Bard, I don't think you intended to defend antisemitism. I don't that that's why you joined up with Indymedia.
But it was pretty clear that your constant refusal to see how Atzmon was deliberately adapting the language and imagery of antisemitism for an "anti-Zionist" audience was based on something other than the facts themselves. It was something he delighted in: take some antisemitic image, call it "anti-Zionist," and toss it like a stink bomb, confident that you would not actually try to look behind the rhetoric, confident that you would assume any controversy was Zionist-generated, even when the antisemitic imagery Atzmon adapted stretched all the way to Holocaust denial.
When the PSC and BDS said goodbye to the Atzmon wing, it was because they had done what you had forbidden yourself to do: they had actually examined Atzmon's rhetoric in the light of the long cultural history of the many forms of antisemitism, and they found (a) the overlaps were egregious and (b) the overlaps were intentional.
It is no secret that Atzmon's reputation began to sink when he refused to distance himself from Paul Eisen's pro-Holocaust-denial essay. Holocaust denial is a matter not of Zionism but of world history. But by draping the word "Zionist" on the Holocaust, Atzmon precluded the possibility that you would independently discover just what was so wrong and offensive and lie-filled about Eisen's essay, and just why so many people found it so unacceptable that Atzmon was unable to clearly wash his hands of it.
Atzmon's counterargument -- institutional infiltration by "anti-Zionist Zionists" and Tony Greenstein -- was laughably inept. But you had to accept it. You couldn't allow yourself to question it, even as one some level you understood its ridiculousness. And Tony Greenstein made, you decided, a great target for your inner anger and therefore a great distraction.
But because you forbid yourself from asking a simple question -- how is Atzmon intentionally using the rhetoric of antisemitism, and is it good for the Palestinians when he does that? -- you were unable to see why the PSC did what it did, why BDS did what it did, why Hope not Hate did what it did, why the Zero Books authors did what they did in their letter, why Ali Abunimah's letter went out. You also didn't see how thick "deliberation.info" was with antisemitic shit until it almost dragged you under as well. Why did you miss all this, even when it was fairly screaming at you? Because you had forbidden yourself, for pure existential reasons, from asking a simple question.
Instead, your only option was to batten down the hatches, and tie yourself ever tighter to The Great Atzmon. And then batten them down tighter. And then batten them down tighter still, lest any bits of that question leaked through.
Are you strong enough to ask yourself that question now?
Are you finally able to ask yourself how you got a reputation as a stalwart defender of antisemitism, and accept that it wasn't a Zionist plot that did that, but that you did it to yourself? Well, to yourself and Indymedia?
Are you finally able to understand that your refusal -- not inability, refusal -- to see Atzmon's antisemitism led you down the very dark path you find yourself on now?
There are things we will never agree on. But I think that if you finally take the time to educate yourself about the history of antisemitic rhetoric, you will at last understand the field Atzmon was playing on, the nasty games he was playing and for which he was drummed out of the corps, and you will at last understand what the Atzmon battle was really about, and why Atzmon lost.
Currently, you still do not.

I was paying attention - I saw Tony attacking the PSC executive after he lost his first attempt to get the so-called 'Atzmonites' out.. I saw how his attacks stopped and he started lavishing them with praise after he finally got his own way, and his former friend and ally Francis Clark Lowe was expelled following outrageously unjust proceedings. I also saw the PSC Executive advocating a 2 state solution. So you're never going to convince me that:
(a) The PSC Executive acted with integrity.
(b) You believe they have integrity.
As was the case with Indymedia, PSC suffered extreme coercion from Greenstein - who was never an Indymedia poster, and who had zero respect for our procedure. As an IMCista from another country you should have left us, as an autonomous collective, to come to our own decision. Instead you stirred the pot and attacked those you saw as insufficiently anti-Atzmon.
"It is no secret that Atzmon's reputation began to sink when he refused to distance himself from Paul Eisen's pro-Holocaust-denial essay."
Hurrah - guilt by association....Why should Atzmon jump through your hoops - who gave you the right to insist that an individual start denouncing others, or their ideas? Are you some kind of Inquisition?
Indymedia uk is an open publishing site - it is not a kangaroo court! It is not a tool for resolving internecine disputes! It is not a part of your obsessive need to shut down and proscribe discussion. It is not a marriage burueau for American and British tribalists.
I said from the start that the kollectives had to decide if the article was 'anti-Semitic' and if a consensus was reached, then it should be hidden. If no consensus, then it should remain up. But you and Greenstein were unable to accept that it was OUR decision and it was for us to deal with. Neither of you werre even site users ffs.
I am bored with you now.
If Atzmon wants to denounce anyone, I'm sure he will.
If I want to, I will.
But I will not be dictated to.
And if you want an apology for anything - then start off by acknowledging that your own behaviour was despicable, that you had no right to screw with the autonomy of an IMC in a different country, of which you were not a member, and that your defence of the integrity of groups that you oppose is without an ounce of integrity, And then apologise for it.
And sod off until you do.

So you had a tough childhood in South Africa - So did a lot of people !
Mandela spent 22 years in a harsh prison it didn't turn him into a Jew hating loony
Charlize Theron grew up in J'burg with an alcoholic violent father that her mother killed one day, she still managed to avoid translating that experience into Holocaust denial !
Oliver Tambo was beaten as a boy every day, he still thought that Jews and Arabs could live together in the Middle East.
Your past is not an excuse - get off the fucking internet, stop obsessing about Jews and go live a life of fun, joy, contribution, commitment and tolerance
You might find you have a few more friends then.

I forced you to confront the fact that you were failing to confont something, and that anybody following the Atzmon story knew that you couldn't confront it, and that because you couldn't confront it you only pounded the table louder and shouted more shriekily.
I showed anyone watching to just what end-of-the-earth extent you would go to prevent yourself from asking the yourself the same question the rest of Palestinian solidarity did: why does Atzmon sound so much like an antisemite all the time, and why does he quote so many antisemites in support of his own position?
But you, Roy, were not in a position where you could ask yourself that question.
That left you utterly in the dark about how Atzmon found himself on the outside looking in. You still think it has something to do with a zionist conspiracy. It's a startlingly unreal place you occupy.
I am enough of an optimist to believe that one day the penny will drop for you.
Remember Side 4 of "The Wall," when Pink is going through his Atzmon phase and bigging up the Nazis the way Atzmon bigs up Holocaust deniers? Remember Gerald Scarfe's gatefold drawing of the Judge as Pink's own bare bottom in a powdered wig? Waters described that as intending to symbolize Pink's own inability to "deal with his own shit" - that is, to recognize that he was more than just a victim, and that he too had harmed people but was too scared to admit it to himself.
There's a lot of that in your current stance. Honestly looking at the damage you caused Indymedia is too much of "your own shit" for you to deal with now, so you balk. Honestly looking at Atzmon's antisemitic rhetoric, as Abunimah and Barghouti and other leading Palestinian activists have, is too much "your own shit." Honestly looking at why Palestine Place had no room for the Atzmon wing is too much "your own shit."
It's easier for you to blame a plot of anti-Zionist zionists.
Because you know that if you honestly looked at Atzmon's flaws and found that you were wrong, and that all the damage you inflicted on Indymedia's reputation and your own was based solely on your error and refusal to open your eyes, then -- well, that's too scary for you to contemplate, so you don't.
Again, though, you're not dumb, you're just scared - so scared you're in denial.

I am not you and I do not think like you. If you cannot understand my article then why should I trust anything else you say?
Indymedia is not the place for this discussion - you'll have to wait until I have the time and energy to address your points on my new blog failed project.me
I am without net at home and will be away for a few days - mods fell free to hide this and post I responded to......

the Mission of Indymedia
16.01.2014 12:42
In the case of Indymedia uk we made it very clear in our mission statement that we were working "for a world based on freedom, cooperation, justice and solidarity, and against environmental degradation, neoliberal exploitation, racism and patriarchy." That struggle continues.
Comments are welcome from anyone who has an open heart, no secret agenda, and who wants the same world as us, and which are in line with our mission statement.
Solidarity!!!
