Activists climb County Hall, Westminster in anti war, anti austerity protest

Black Katz Kollektive | 02.07.2013 17:18

End the war
Mourn the dead
Heal the wounded

The newly formed Black Katz Kollektive has within the last hour occupied County Hall on the south side of Westminster Bridge facing the Houses of Parliament, with banners unfurled down the side of the building. Their message is simple: stop the war, mourn the dead, heal the wounded (see full communique below). They have not given a time at which they plan on coming down. Their aim is to highlight domestic and global conflicts and austerity measures and to spur the kind of protests recently seen in Turkey and Brazil.

Statement from the Black Katz Kollektive

Over the last few years, activism has had a number of serious set backs. The success of the student and occupy movement are but a long distance memory. The realisation of the extent of infiltration and surveillance that has been directed towards us, has had a demoralising effect on groups and individuals, The story of #vancops, the undercover police operations against political groups and the use of private covert operatives against campaigns has not run its course.

In many cases our politics and indeed our actions has been reactionary, we no longer are setting the agenda. Although we are small number of activists, we have experience in many groups and collectives and over the years we have seen effective revolutionary politics and actions being quashed by gatekeepers, what do we mean about gatekeepers?

We believe the term gatekeeper, relates to those self appointed leaders, with questionable authority. In many cases these individuals are exploiting informal hierarchies in order to set the agenda for the movement, often for their own social benefit.

Although this paints a very depressing picture, will believe there are solutions. That is what motivates us today to take this action. In the coming months, we hope to analysis the issues in a more in-depth way and coordinate that with direct action.

We are not a closed group, but we take our security very serious. We have worked together on many issues and have managed to build trust over a number of years. This, in essence, is the building blocks of a good affinity group. We believe affinity groups are the way forward and in themselves tackle some of the issues of infiltration and surveillance. We therefore would suggest that you get familiar with www.activistsecurity.org. This resource is full of practical tips and pointers on organisation that has been based on experience built from activists over decades.

Today we are focusing on war in all its forms, ranging from the war on the poor, to the war being waged against and across the Middle East.

We ourselves take inspiration from our comrades in Turkey, Egypt, and Brazil, who are showing that mass movements can be built from little sparks of inspiration.

We're not an elitist group, we have as much to learn as everyone else. We hope this action today motivates and gives others inspiration to take action themselves.

END THE WAR

End the war on whistleblowers
End the war in Afghanistan
End the war in Syria
End the war with drones
End the war on badgers
End the war on the poor
End the war on the homeless
End the war on justice
End the war on the disabled
End the war on the NHS
End wars for oil
End the war in Africa

MOURN THE DEAD

Mourn the loss of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of innocent citizens of the globe in the so-called "war on terror".
Mourn the loss of the NHS and welfare state.
Mourn the loss of "from the cradle to the grave". Mourn the loss of legal aid.
Mourn the loss of employment rights.
Mourn the loss of the right to protest.

HEAL THE WOUNDED

Heal those displaced as a result of global capitalism and its war for profit.
Heal those deepest affected by the so-called austerity measures.
Heal those wounded, maimed and traumatised through armed conflict and police brutality.
Heal those who have been subject to racial or religious attacks.
Heal those families who have lost loved ones as a result of suicide directly connected to welfare cuts.
