Charity snubs EDL for using cancer stricken girl in far right campaign

One of the UK’s leading children’s cancer charities are refunding money donated by EDL supporters after leader Tommy Robinson used the plight of a two year-old girl as a political cover for far-right activities.

As reported by Scrapbook this week, Robinson and his fellow leader Kevin Carroll planned to march past the East London Mosque towards the scene of Lee Rigby’s murder in Woolwich – under the pretext that they were raising money for a child suffering from Neuroblastoma.

Robinson even attempted to link the girl’s plight with immigration:

“There’s over 80 million people registered on the NHS in this country [sic] and there’s only 60 million people in this country. So we have NHS tourists coming in and using our NHS and we have English girls not getting funded to save their lives.”

With an ongoing programme of fundraising activities planned by the EDL, the Neuroblastoma Cancer Children’s Alliance (NCCA UK) clearly thought better of becoming the official charity of the far-right group. The NCCA become the second charity to reject EDL donations after Help For Heroes refused money in the wake of the murder of Lee Rigby.

You can make an EDL-free donation to the appeal by clicking here.

UPDATE: Full statement from NCCA UK

“The Neuroblastoma Children’s Cancer Alliance is politically neutral and, as such, is not associated with the EDL and its fundraising activities. Ultimately, it is our goal to prevent families like Amelia-Mae’s being in the position of having to fundraise desperately to pay for treatment abroad. The NCCA UK will continue its efforts to help families access available treatment while making more options available here in the UK through its INBRC research collaborative. The NCCA UK has offered to reimburse Amelia-Mae’s appeal with the money raised by by Tommy Robinson so far (£5798.87) from the charity’ general funds.”

The little girl won’t lose out — the charity are reimbursing the EDL money for her campaign from the charity’s central funds.
