Rohani becomes Iran’s new president

Hassan Rohani has won Iran's 11th presidential election following a vote that saw a massive popular turnout on June 14. Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar announced on Saturday that of a total of 36,704,156 valid ballots counted, Rohani won 50.70 percent of the ballots with 18,613,329 votes. Principlist candidate Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf came in behind Rohani by a wide margin, winning 6,077,292 votes. He conveyed his congratulations to Rohani on his victory.


Principlist Saeed Jalili won 4,168,946 votes, and independent Mohsen Rezaei 3,884,412 votes. Principlist Ali-Akbar Velayati and independent Mohammad Gharazi ranked at the bottom of the list, with 2,268,753 and 446,015 votes, respectively.

A total of 1,245,409 ballots were declared invalid.

Nearly 50.5 million Iranians, including more than 1.6 million first-time voters, were eligible to participate in the June 14 elections. The Interior Ministry put voter turnout at 72.7 percent.

And yet in the weeks, months and years ahead there will be a persistant campaign of harrassment, intimidation and delegitimisation of Iran's status by extremist Zionist and US Republican fanatics which will be repeated verbatim throughout the entirety of the western media. No attempt will be made to tell us who is responsible for this behaviour and disinformation, we will just be expected to swallow it without complaint.

And when it happens, we will be told that its ALL Iran's fault. The Socialists will do nothing to prevent it, they will just argue over the nitty gritty of the detail leaving the very worst of it intact to inflame the wests polemic against a legitimate democratic nation state.

Iran is not the authoritarian dictatorship here...we are.

The people of Iran chose the most un-Ahmadinejadian of the candidates, and did so by a big enough margin not to need a run-off race. That's good news for everyone - except, I suppose, the we-liked-Ahmadinejad crowd, who are probably blaming Jews for the loss even at this moment. What the Iranians figured out was that Ahmadinejad wasn't really good at anything except pissing off Jews. Of course, that alone would make him a hero to some "anti-Zionists *wink wink*" here.

When the result came out, there was dancing in the streets and people singing "Ahmadi goodbye."

Ahmadinejad was a dead-end. Iran recognized that and voted to go in the other direction, toward engagement with the west.

Of course some people are very disappointed. Who is going to pay for those Holocaust denial conferences now that Ahmadi's out of office?

Yeah people will be speaking out against Iran, so what? This guys a so called moderate, but will do nothing to decrease the level of religious oppression in Iran by the regime there and it's laws
