at 4.30 this afternoon, the rally outside the ministry of justice had already attracted a couple of hundred people, spilling right across the road outside. although 'petty france' isn't a very busy thoroughfare, a coach had to reverse back to find another route, and other vehicles turned around.

i couldn't help thinking that if this demo had comprised anarchists as opposed to besuited solicitors, the police would have quickly pushed people to the pavements. but for the lawyers, there wasn't a single policeman in sight.

among the speakers addressing the crowd were QCs geoffrey robertson, dinah rose, and michael fordham, as well as bianca jagger and reps from 'liberty' and 'reprieve'.

they outlined the likely damage that conservative justice minister chris grayling's plans would wreak on the legal system as cuts designed to save a couple of hundred million pounds will severely restrict legal aid, taking the rights of the poor, the dispossessed, immigrants and activists back to pre-magna carta levels .

chris grayling is the first non-lawyer for hundreds of years to hold the position of lord chancellor, and his proposals have attracted widespread condemnation from the legal profession, including a letter to the telegraph signed by 90 QCs, and a total of 13,000 responses to the consultation, confirmed by the ministry of justice today.

the previous government has already withdrawn much legal support to prisoners, but the new cuts will effectively end all prison legal aid except for a handful of situations.

free legal help has also already been curtailed in cases of welfare benefit advice and immigration, including deportation appeals. but now the government has set its sights on the criminal aid budget, and the plan is to introduce competition so that work goes to the cheapest bidder rather than a defendant's choice. this will see the total decline of specialism, as advisors with years of experience in particular aspects of law will lose all their work to 'mclawyers' contracted to companies like G4S or Serco.

the vast majority of consultation responses point out the likely miscarriages of justice that will no doubt follow these cuts, and the chance to challenge those miscarriages will become only a privilege of the rich.

justice should of course be equal for all, and grayling's ideas will effectively destroy that principle completely.

as the crowd grew to several hundred over the course of three hours, a couple of policemen turned up to keep an eye on things. no PLO (protest liaison officers) were spotted.

I am broke because of legal aid.

The mother of my children stopped me seeing them so I applied to court.

Mother was funded by legal aid.

I worked so was not.

I got a contact order / she broke it / back to court

This circle has went on for 8 years, I have lost my home, my job and more importantly my children, thanks to a spiteful ex bankrolled by legal aid.

No doubt solicitors, barristers and their freemason Judge friends will be upset to see their gravy train come to an end.

Justice is for the very rich or the very poor.

Your average working class guy, is priced out of it

Fuck their system, it didnt work for me or my kids

i have heard similar terrible stories in the past, and i'm not eligible for most legal aid myself.

however, the answer is to EXTEND legal aid, not cut it further, and if corporations like apple, google, tesco, vodafone, and the energy companies, etc etc, actually paid their FAIR taxes, we wouldn't need "austerity" cuts, and the funding could be in place to provide equal and fair justice to all.

although i appreciate what you say about your terrible experience, please don't fall into the trap of blaming or hating others like you or poorer. it's what the privileged and richest want from you.

we should all be trying to strive for the alternative, and not end up squabbling while the most powerful laugh at us.

I agree with what you say full heartily. My snipe, out of bitterness was aimed at the parasites, mainly high street solicitors who profiteer from destroying families.

I've been involved in many aspects of protest / activism since the 80's and fully appreciate where you are coming from.

Family law is corrupt. I was made out to be an abuser of both my ex and children.

Eventually the truth did out and I was reunited with my kids.

My activism background and hatred of injustice saw me becoming a McKenzie friend (lay person) for people, mainly fathers who couldnt afford a solicitor and fell short of legal aid, as myself did.

It was then that I discovered that it wasnt (just) my ex that lied and made up stories, the industry supports it. It prolongs cases.

The allegations, courses, investigations follow the same old pattern, to the point I'm sure solicitors just paste and copy statements for their different clients and merely change personal details.

Litigating in person (LIP) is known by those who are able to, to be faster and much more direct. The reason? Mckenzies are not looking for money, simply justice.

During my first stint, I actually thought the courts were fools, I mean how could they not see that if I was half the person I was being made out to be I would not be spending thousands on trying to ensure my kids grew up with a father.

I came to realise that of course they knew that, that is what makes it work so profitably.

I speak personally and bitterly though of family law only, your post was valid and I apologise for my rather crass remark on what is a much wider issue regarding legal aid cuts.

I was particular bitter when I wrote the post after seeing a barristers 4 justice demo outside the court where I got everything but justice for me and my kids, despite, as I said, having contact orders the length of both arms.

Charging a set fee for barristers in criminal cases for example means we can kiss goodbye to any form of justice.

"you want to plead not guilty ?".....sorry I cant help you. They'll only want clients wishing to plead guilty or worse still will advise clients to plead guilty.

Courts will be a wash with the cry "My client pleads guilty sir"............"next please"
