The Falkland Islands

Tory | 11.04.2013 18:06

If it wasn't for Margaret Thatcher, 3,000+ innocent people would have been kicked out of their homes at gun point, or all forced to speak Spanish

Margaret Thatcher saved the Falklands from these land bullies in Argentina.

How the world would be different

if we had had a Thatcher (and an army) at the time of the Scottish Clearances or Irish Genocide.
Still maybe all is not lost, maybe the ghost/spirit of Maggie will rise in the post independence Scotland to lead the movement for the overthrow of the Lords Sutherland et al?

Thatcher and Galtieri conspired

11.04.2013 22:45

Thatcher and Galtieri conspired to manufacture a crisis which sent ordinary soldiers to die, because Thatcher was deeply unpopular in the UK at that time, and because Galtieri was facing a general strike back home in Argentina, and both leaders needed to distract attention away from their own domestic crises. Sure you can argue that Thatcher "saved" the Falkland Islanders, but both of these dictators (unofficially) colluded to sacrifice ordinary people to their political ambitions

During the Falklands war France assisted Thatcher by helping stop the Argentine forces get their hands on more (French) Exocet missiles, while the Chilean dictatorship helped Britain with access to military communications facilities etc. After the war Thatcher made no secret of her contempt for the govt that helped her in France, but she retained a deep and personal affection for the Chilean Fascist, torturer and serial-killer General Pinochet... why? Educate yourself and maybe you'll find out!
