EDL threaten Muslim conference in Nottingham

anon@indymedia.org (Antifash) | 21.03.2013 08:55

Nottingham EDL are trying to shut down a Family Retreat conference at the University of Nottingham for the sole reason that it is being held by Muslims. Calling the organisers "Jihadis" and the event a "hate speech conference" they are encouraging supporters to contact the East Midlands Conference Centre to get the event cancelled and are threatening to hold a demonstration if it goes ahead. In fact, the family event is a very apolitical one, focused mainly on doctrinal issues within Islam. But then the speakers do have beards...

It seems that the EDL only have issues with the event because it is organised by and for Muslims. Of course, if a Muslim group were to protest and try to shut down a Christian event, the EDL would be baying for blood. Apparently, it's alright when it's the other way round though. It seems they are only in favour of their own freedom of speech but want to silence others.

The conference is scheduled to take place from Fri 29 March - Mon 01 April at the East Midlands Conference Centre on Nottingham University's main campus.

Extremist speakers

I didn't look up everyone on the speakers list for this "retreat", but while some of the speakers seem to be somewhere within the general remit of vaguely sensible -

Apparently, it's alright then its the other way around too. I saw recently that the anti-fasc were trying to prevent some events that the EDL organised. With anti-fasc, it seems they are only in favour of their own freedom of speech but want to silence others.

arnt im clever

any evidence of that?

The title suggest "threatened" giving the feel that it is violence.
Whereas the article's body says "threatens to hold a demonstration"

Perhaps a more accurate title would be:
"EDL to hold counter demonstration against Muslim conference in Nottingham"

As the thousands of Palestinians who have suffered Israel's policy of 'Administrative Detention' could testify doing time in an Israeli jail does not necessarily signify criminality, nor does the U.S's government's mirroring of Israeli policy with regard to Palestinian's. From the article you link to ... "Salah was classified a “specially designated terrorist” by the U.S. Treasury Department in 1995 while he was in an Israeli prison on charges of providing support to Hamas.

He later pleaded guilty to the charges – but only after 55 days of intense interrogation, sleep deprivation and physical abuse, according to his attorneys. After five years in prison in Israel, Salah returned to the United States, where federal prosecutors in Chicago eventually brought criminal charges against him.", the article goes on to point out that the charges were subsequently dropped when he made a legal challenge. If he's a US resident who is also Palestinian and has been given permission to fly here by the US i'd say its a fairly safe bet the man is pretty moderate in his views...

The tiny Wikipedia entry you link to for the other speaker refers to a comment he allegedly made over a decade ago, there is no other information in the entry, it's an utterly reprehensible vile remark if true ( it appears he denied it at the time) but surely in the decade which has passed since then he must have given some other indication of holding such a view and indeed equally odious positions?? .... is that all you've got??
