Chorlton Good Neighbours, Manchester, will pay tribute to the great generation, now in their 90’s. who served their country in World War 2

This will take place on Thursday Feb 7th 2013 1.30-3.30pm at Chorlton Good Neighbours, Wilbraham St Ninian’s Church , Egerton Rd South, Chorlton, Manchester, M21 OXJ

There will be a presentation of medals to our two Arctic Convoy veterans, Bob Cowan & John Mackay by Andrey Makarenko, from the Embassy of the Russian Federation in London.

Russia is still not allowed to present the medal of Ushakov by the British Government, but the Russian embassy feels so strongly about the sacrifice made by the Arctic Convoys in getting much needed supplies through to Russia during WW2, that they will come in person to present them with a “65th Anniversary of Victory" medal

The High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, George Almond, CBE will present all 4 WW2 veterans with inscribed plaques from Chorlton Good Neighbours to celebrate the contribution they made to the defence of this country in WW2

The four veterans:
Bob Cowan, for whom we mounted a successful campaign for an Arctic Convoy medal to be awarded to veterans such as himself

John Mackay, who was a radar operator on a destroyer, that hunted down submarines to protect the Arctic Convoys

Alan Wood, mosquito pilot with Coastal Command, shot down several times ovver the North Sea and survived, He was onced adrift in a one-man dinghy for 4 days

Mickie Mitchell, who as a young woman drove army petrol supplies round during the Manchester blitz

Bob, John, Alan and Mickie will all be at the presentation to receive their awards and answer questions
WW2 photos of all of the veterans are available
video interviews with all 4 veterans are available online
