We are seeing a lot of problems right now in the wider British Indymedia family. The London newswire has shut down, both Northern and Notts are about to disable publishing, Sheffield, Oxford and South Coast are little more than one person collectives and the Mayday group that uses the Indymedia UK name are running that site into the ground. Only Bristol Indymedia is doing well and it's worth seeing if we can extend the success of BINDY to the entire country.
Notts Indymedia are currently trying to understand the problem and it seems that there is a realisation that Indymedia has fallen behind new media like Facebook and Twitter, is not always viewed as welcoming to new people and is seen by many as closely aligned with the 911 Truth movement and Antisemitism. For those of us who love Indy this is hard to hear but that is the reality of how Indy is seen so we must address that. In my view Bristol is not included in that perception probably because the moderators have a wider set of views and opinions that ensures diversity and mutual respect in the moderation descion making however the observations regarding new media probably do apply. Do we need a mobile version that is 'quick and easy' to use and post, should we simply move to facebook (No!), maybe posting a Twitter link to every story is the way to go so that we drive people to the site ? These are just my ideas, I hope others will contribute.
Bristol Indymedia is the sole 'real' Indymedia left and is expanding and well supported surely it is time for BINDY to take over the Indymedia UK name that Mayday are using and rebuild the Indymedia name in Britain. Are the Bristol mods up for it ?
