New Years Eve Prisoner Solidarity - leaflet

anon@indymedia.org (Notts ABC) | 04.01.2013 16:55

This leaflet was handed out at the prisoner solidarity demo at HMP Nottingham on New Years Eve:

Prisons destroy people. They destroy families, friendships and communities too. Putting somebody in prison is an act of violence which contributes nothing real or positive and only brutalises those who are already struggling. We don't believe that prison is the answer to any questions we have ever asked.

Solidarity is our weapon.

Our passion for freedom is stronger than all prisons.

Prisons are the embodiment and reinforcement of the white supremacist, patriarchal and classist society we live in. They protect property and capital whilst attacking those who are oppressed and marginalised by the dominant structures of this society.

Prisons are racist - Black prisoners make up 15% of the prisoner population compared with 2.2% of the general population.

Prisons destroy people - The suicide rate in prisons is almost 15 times higher than in the general population: in 2002 the rate was 143 per 100,000 compared to 9 per 100,00 in the general population.

Prisons are an attack on the poor - 37% of people are unemployed at the time of imprisonment - around 7 times the national unemployment rate. 13% are unable to work because of long-term sickness or disability.

The prison-industrial complex is growing - The current UK prison population is around 100,000. Thirty years ago it was half of that. New Labour created one new imprisonable offence for each day they were in office.

Prisons reinforce the patriarchy - Over half the women in prison report having suffered domestic violence and one in three has experienced sexual abuse.

Solidarity to all prisoners.

Fire to the prisons!

>> Prisons destroy people. They destroy families, friendships and communities too. Prison protect people, protect families, friendships and communities. Putting somebody in prison protects the community from these people's violence, so that we and our familities are safe from muggers and robbers who may attack us just for our mobile phones in the dark and leave us bleeding and in a coma on the pavement.

>> Prisons are the embodiment and reinforcement of the white supremacist, patriarchal and classist society we live in. They protect property and capital whilst attacking those who are oppressed and marginalised by the dominant structures of this society.
Yes, they protect property and capital by keeping thieves away in prison to protect the rest of us hard working folk who toil away to pay for things that we own. Prison attacks the corrupt and the thieves who rob society without providing any work back.

>> Prisons are racist - Black prisoners make up 15% of the prisoner population compared with 2.2% of the general population.
You make an assumption that black people have an equal chance of committing crimes as white people. I would think it is foolish to assume that this is so. It is not true. Gang violence, drug dealing etc and much more predominant in black gangs than in white. Facts that are verifiable.

>> Prisons destroy people - The suicide rate in prisons is almost 15 times higher than in the general population: in 2002 the rate was 143 per 100,000 compared to 9 per 100,00 in the general population.
Yes, it would be higher in prison because prison's hold the mentally deranged who think it is fair enough to beat someone up to steal their belongings. These people are mentally unhinged already, and once denied the opportunity to steal things become depressed.

>> Prisons are an attack on the poor - 37% of people are unemployed at the time of imprisonment - around 7 times the national unemployment rate. 13% are unable to work because of long-term sickness or disability.
Prisons are an attack on criminals. Criminals choose not to work but rather use their time to steal so they can have the latest mobile phone. There are MILLIONS of poor people who are not in prison. Likewise there are plenty of rich people who are in prison.

>> The prison-industrial complex is growing - The current UK prison population is around 100,000. Thirty years ago it was half of that. New Labour created one new imprisonable offence for each day they were in office.
There are more and more scum moving into the UK, and from our failing education system, rap music and violence of TV, many youth feel compelled to steal things through violence. However, they are not intelligent enough to not get caught.

>> Prisons reinforce the patriarchy - Over half the women in prison report having suffered domestic violence and one in three has experienced sexual abuse.
Prisons protect woman from rapists and muggers. A rapist in prison cannot attack a woman on the outside who is walking through a dark park at night. WOman are protected from hoodlums who would steal a woman's mobile phone using violence.
