An article about the Library Street London Social Centre in Elephant and castle, Letting people kn ow what we've been up to, a brief overview of spaces at the Centre and Info on two up coming events. For more info see: http://librarystreetlondon.wordpress.com/
It's been a busy time for everyone at the Library Street Social Centre since our last news post, so we thought we'd try and do a quick round up of all the fun things we've been up two and some of the things we have to come!
PEOPLES KITCHEN
So we've been having regular Peoples Kitchens every thursday for the past 5 weeks, with a free hot vegan/veggie meal and a film/talk/ or other event afterwards. The last few peoples kitchens have seen around 40 people each week coming to share a meal, with local squatters and other members of the community coming round to share our delicious food. Last week we had a fantastic talk about how to start your own Housing Coop after dinner, and the week before that we had music from four local bands.
This Thursday we have a really exciting peoples kitchen and film event:
Filmmaker & photographer Ross Domoney will be screening his new documentary at Library Street London! This Thursday the 20th, 7:30pm.
From his projects on British nationalism, female freedom fighters in Chile and immigrant workers in Dubai (to name a few), Ross focuses his attention on Athens where crippling austerity and unemployment has forced people to re-question their existence and stand up in struggle against the state.
The streets of Athens will be vividly brought to us in “Athens: Social Meltdown” followed by a Q&A with the director. {Aletheia Collective> http://aletheiaphotos.com/a-blog/2012/12/17/athens-film-being-screened-at-new-london-social-center.html }
Beforehand, we’ll be running our usual People’s Kitchen from 6pm with skipped vegetarian and vegan food.
OTHER EVENTS:
We've been hosting between two and three events in the space every week for the last month or so; highlights have included a benefit party hosted by the "create Space charity" who decorated the house beautifully and have painted some amazing spray paint murals on lots of our interior walls, the Christmas social of the PIIGS UNCUT group (a radical protest group made up mostly of portugese, irish , italian, spanish and greek people living in London), and a fantastic talk about the Madrid Social Centre scene which was given by some of Library Streets on crew, detailing their experiences whilst in Madrid.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
Thursday (Tomorrow) 20/12/12- Peoples Kitchen and Film “Athens: Social Meltdown” by Ross Domoney !
Friday 21/12/12- Fundraising Event with food and music in aid of victims of the Iranian Earthquake Food! Live music! Good vibe and good reasons!
This summer's earthquakes in Iran left thousand of people homeless, and many remained living in unforgiving conditions (even living in tends!), as the winter approached and another quake hit in December.
Join us for this event of solidarity to send them money and try to make their winter slightly sweeter!
Entry> Suggested donation: £5
"Concessionary" suggested donation: £3
"If you are broken" donation: donate what you can or just come in and support with your awarness & concern.
PERMANENT FIXTURES THAT PEOPLE CAN COME AND USE AT ANY EVENT OR CONTACT US TO USE ANY TIME
Freeshop:
The freeshop is in the space next to the library and infoshop and contains clothes, toys, furniture, and other random things that are free for anyone to take and make use of. It works on the principle of mutual aid (basically you can get stuff without paying, and give stuff without expecting anything back). Of course this means that we are dependent on donations, so if you have clothes or other items that you no longer need then you can donate them to the freeshop for someone else to have!
The clothing section of the freeshop is divided up into lots of different sections and you can usually find anything from shoes, coats and hats to jumpers, trousers, shirts and underwear (clean).
Please treat the freeshop with respect, try to keep it tidy and only take things that you actually need.
The library
The aim of the Library is to provide free book resources to anyone who visits Library Street; we believe that people should have access to books and literature without having to pay for them and without having to apply for a library card (something you cannot do in most state libraries without a fixed address).
The Library is divided into two sections, the static Library and the lending/taking Library. Books and pamphlets from the static Library can be read inside the space when it is open, but unfortunately need to stay in the space as they either belong to individuals or to the house and we cannot afford to loose them. Books and pamphlets in the lending/taking section can be read in or outside the space and it is totally cool to take them home to read; it is also o.k. to keep these books or share them with others as they are donated and a communal resource. Books in the static Library are stickered to make this obvious and will probably contain someone’s name in the inside of them, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THESE, and return them to the shelf you found them on when leaving the space.
If you have any books that you do not need, then we greatly accept donations for either the static or lending/taking library and we are always looking to expand.
The infoshop
The infoshop contains a wide selection of newspapers, pamphlets, flyers, posters, polemics, and other materials all of which are free to read in or out of the space, and which can be taken home distributed etc.
The aim of the infoshop is to provide information about all sorts of subjects from upcoming community events, to political actions, to news from across the world. We want to create a space where information can be shared freely and where people can learn about the experiences of others and inform others of their own.
Everyone is welcome to add literature, pamphlets etc. to the info shop and it is actively encouraged that people take a look here every time they visit in order to hear about things that are going on in the local area. The only guideline for leaving literature is that it does not breach our safer space policy; we will remove literature if it does.
