Two student organizations at Florida Atlantic University teamed up with Youth for Human Rights of Florida (YHRF) in a march, speeches and musical performances to celebrate United Nations Day of Tolerance.

TEAM UP ON DAY OF TOLERANCE
On Thursday, November 15, 2012, two student organizations at Florida Atlantic University – Be Aware, Share and Act for Peace (ASAP) and the Sociology Student Association – teamed up with Youth for Human Rights of Florida (YHRF) in a march, speeches and musical performances to celebrate United Nations Day of Tolerance.
Assembling in the Florida Atlantic University Student Union building in Boca Raton, Florida, approximately 100 students and other participants listened to an introduction by FAU student Laura Facundo, who organized the event. Laura presented the documentary Story of Human Rights, which is a short world history of human rights.
FAU Professor of Political Science and Chair at the College of Arts and Letters Dr. Aimee Arias spoke to the group about human rights violations around the world and encouraged support for Malala, the young human rights activist who was shot by Taliban assassins and is currently recovering in the United Kingdom.
Human Rights activists, artists and YHRF members Jessy Leros and Dustin McGahee performed and sang for the participants.
Following the presentations the students, led by FAU’s Brazilian Percussion Ensemble, walked through the FAU campus with banners and information for passersby.
Human Rights violations occur in Florida daily not only in the form of human trafficking, but bullying in schools and other hate crimes. Florida is reported to be one of the top three states where traffickers sell humans beings for sex and labor.
The purpose of the walk was to raise awareness about these violations, and to raise awareness of the need to insist on the respect for all human rights as given in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
The mission of ASAP is to encourage FAU students to give back to the community and raise awareness on issues such as poverty, human trafficking, global education and inequality.
Youth for Human Rights Florida is a chapter of Youth for Human Rights International, a non-profit organization with a unique video-based educational program about our 30 human rights according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The creation of YHRI was inspired by great humanitarians through history such as Mahatma Gandhi, who said "You must be the change you wish to see in the world," and L. Ron Hubbard, who said, “Human Rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream”
