UG#593 - Let Your Life Be A Friction (To Stop The Machine)

Robin Upton | 25.11.2012 08:53 | Occupy Everywhere | Analysis | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

After a call to action to 'stop the machine', we hear a couple of voices of those whose lives have been a friction to slow it down. Angie Zelter tells of the plowshares destruction of nuclear weapons, and John Stewart on the prevention of airport expansion, while Gwen Schulman reports of how Canadian environmental NGOs are 'partnering' with big mining firms.

We start this week with a brief except from Mario Savio's 'Odious Machine' speech, followed by the soundtrack to a video by ClassWarFilms which retells the myth of American exceptionalism. It concludes by recalling Thoreau's injunction to 'Let Your Life Be A Friction To Stop The Machine'.

We then hear from UK anti-nuclear activist Angie Zelter on how she started the plowshares movement which has inspired thousands to damage nuclear weapons and other oppressive military equipment. She reports that juries are increasingly finding in favor of those who put their lives on the line with such direct action.

Then we hear from Gwen Schulman on how she broke the story of Canadian Environmental NGOs teaming up with the largest mining companies. Next a section by John Stewart on his experience opposing airport expansion -- and his summary expulsion from USA.

We conclude with another reading from chapter 7 of David Graeber's Debt, The First 5000 Years.
