Eoin Clarke reports that "Today [Sat 24 Nov 2012] between 2,000-15,000 people (depending on whose account you believe) marched in London to call for the halt to the downgrading and closure of Lewisham Hospital's Accident & Emergency Dept. As part of the report into the South London Health Trust, it was recommended that Lewisham A&E be downgraded. The SHLT was declared bankrupt under this Tory government and will lead to the sell-off of at least 1 hospital in the area. The folly of the decision to downgrade the A&E is obvious, given that Lewisham Hospital has only just undergone a £12m refit. But it is not only that, the decision also flies in the face of local democracy as the patients and public do not want this Ward to close. The You Tube video above shows an excellently attended march at Lewisham Hospital today, where members of the public made their feelings known. The message to Jeremy Hunt is clear, he has no democratic mandate to dismantle NHS services for people who quite obviously want them to remain. You check out this brilliant website set up to try and stop Lewisham A&E being closed down." -
