Fracking lecture at Leeds Uni disrupted and mooned

anon@indymedia.org (Fracktivists) | 19.11.2012 14:55

Protestors with "FRACK-OFF" written on their arses mooned a pro-fracking lecture at Leeds Uni today.

The talk, The Science of Fracking - Societal Issues and Perceptions, by Dale Leckie of Canadian Oil and Gas company Nexen Inc was organised by the Leeds University Centre for Integrated Petroleum Engineering and Geoscience.

Leckie accused critics of being unscientific in their critiques of fracking. He claimed that ground water methane contamination - as shown in the film Gasland where people had been able to set alight to their drinking water - had not occurred because of fracking, he claimed that the contamination is more likely to have occurred because of faults in the pipes bringing the gas to the surface - so not a problem connected to fracking at all then!

He failed to mention in his list of concerns people have around fracking the critical issue of climate change or the problem of the quantities of water that fracking process uses, or that the process can cause fractured rocks to leach out toxic chemicals such as arsenic or radioactive isotopes.

A group of protestors, after raising their concerns at the end of the talk, left and mooned the speaker through the window with FRACK-OFF written on their bums.

Notes:
Nexen Inc is active in fracking and tar sands in North America.

since when did Protestors become Scientists?

19.11.2012 21:22

To be a scientist and know what you are talking about you need to get an education in the field and work in it.

There are no shortcuts. Protestors are not qualified to talk about things scientific unless they actually have the credentials. Otherwise anyone can talk horseshit.

pfff

Since when did Students take the time to fully understand an issue before protesting against it ? I know I certainly didn't when I was a student. Nothing wrong in that, most Students mature and in time understand how the world is run, why Capitalism works, why big bad oil companies need to find more, etc etc but expecting them not to protest because they know fuck all about a subject is asking too much.

Sorry, 'why capitalism works'?

As an expert, could you enlighten me as to why (or if at all) capitalism works.

I'm aware of how it works, but I think how it works is the precise reason it doesn't work for most of us.

As a great placard said at the Oct20 demo 'Capitalism IS working - it's supposed to do this'

The evidence is all around you but do you want to see it ?

Falling infant mortality
Rising living standards
Better education opportunities
Universal healthcare
Lower cost food
Millions in the developing world risen out of poverty

This and much, much more paid for or the result of Capitalism. Now I know you will not accept that, I am sure you will have an argument against it but the fact remains whatever you say will be wrong. Once last point -show me a country where Capitalism is not better than what they have now.
