Protests at Birmingham Hippodrome over Israeli dance company

annon | 15.11.2012 01:08 | Palestine | Birmingham

As Israel cranks up its campaign of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza with fresh bombing attacks and a possible ground invasion, protests took place both inside and outside the Birmingham Hippodrome where the Israeli dance group Batsheva were performing.

For the second night running, protests took place both inside and outside the Birmingham Hippodrome where the Israeli dance group Batsheva were performing.

Three protesters disrupted the performance by displaying a banner bearing the message "End the Occupation - Free Palestine" before being removed by security. Two other protesters were removed for taking photos of the banner and shouting "Free Palestine".

As on the previous night, security were extremely heavy-handed with the protesters. One of them, stated that he intends to make a formal complaint of assault.

Several hours before the performance, a leading officer of West Midlands Palestine Solidarity Campaign had received an intimidating phone call from someone claiming to represent "the Maccabees". Despite the caller's threats that "we will be there too" at the evening performance, the number of counter-demonstrators with Israeli flags was lower than the previous night, while about 50 supporters of Palestinian rights shouted slogans about the latest wave of killings of civilians in Gaza.

The organisations calling for a protest outside the Hippodrome included West Midlands Palestine Solidarity Campaign, BRICUP, Jews for Boycotting Israeli Goods, and University of Birmingham Students for Justice in Palestine.

There were no arrests. The protester who was arrested at the previous night's demonstration was released without charge.

Batsheva's next appearance will be at the Leicester Curve Theatre on 16th November. The protesters have promised to follow them there.
