Ilkeston FC welcomed Fan owned football club FC United of Manchester on Saturday 10th Nov in a Northern Premier League match

Ilkeston FC saw one of its largest matchday crowds when FC United of Manchester visited for last Saturday’s Northern Premier League match. The visiting fans were in typical good voice when FCUM took an early lead after 10 minutes with a Nicky Platt goal. However any hopes that this was the start to an easy win against next to bottom placed Ilkeston were not to be fulfilled. The two sides remained fairly evenly matched until 15 minutes from full time when Joe Maquire equalised for Ilkeston from a corner. FCUM players responded and made several chances but were unable to score again before the final whistle and the game ended in a draw.

FCUM was founded in 2005 by Manchester United fans following Malcolm Glazer's takeover of the Old Trafford club. This was seen as a catalyst and final straw by some, but it was not the sole reason for the formation of FC United. FCUM is a response to the corporate takeover of modern football and for example will not allow a sponsor’s name on its shirts..

It is a community football club owned and democratically run by its members. Its corporate structure is a Community Benefit Society and membership is open to all, with everyone an equal co-owner, holding one voting share in the club.

The club is semi-professional and currently plays in the Northern Premier League. The club regularly attracts crowds of more than 2,000 - several times the league average - and boasts many on and off the field achievements including three consecutive promotions and a number of trophies.
