Live Roller Derby Action!

Portsmouth Roller Wenches vs Big Bucks High Rollers B-team

The Wenches are showing no signs of slowing down! In their last home bout for this year, they are taking on the mighty Big Bucks Rollers B-team. This is surely one not to be missed!

Portsmouth Roller Wenches are fast and furious females who are taking on the country on behalf of the county.

The Portsmouth based roller derby team founded in June 2010 has attracted nearly 40 members coming from all different backgrounds, including teachers, students and nurses. After successfully hosting, and winning, their first two open home bouts, the Wenches are training hard for their third and final home match of 2012, and invite everyone to come along and experience the action from the stands.

Roller derby is a fast, full contact, extreme sport played on quad skates and involves two teams of five skaters skating counterclockwise around a circular track. Each team has one scorer or “jammer” that scores a point for each blocker of the opposing team they can pass in the “pack”. It is a FAST, FULL CONTACT, EXTREME SPORT ON QUAD SKATES!

With the success of film Whip It starring Ellen Page many women in the region are coming to the sport in search of the fast paced extreme sport exclusively for women. Modern roller derby however is nothing like the film and moves such as close lining, tripping and ‘whips’ off offensive Blockers not being allowed in the sport with the emphasis being placed on scoring.

“It sparks an interest in women from all walks of life. I think word of mouth, and the internet has had a part to play as well” says club secretary and coach Tilly ‘Tess of the DerbyWheels’ Newton.

Portsmouth Roller Wenches will be taking on the Big Bucks (b team) on Sunday 21st October at Havant Leisure centre, Civic Centre Road PO9 2AY. Doors open at 2:30pm for a 3:15pm start, and admission is £8 on the door or £7 when bought in advance from our website www.portsmouthrollerwenches.com
