Urgent warning to parents about marijuana and the damage it causes to one’s IQ (intelligence quotient)

A new report reveals that young people are at risk of decreased intelligence if they start to smoke marijuana in adolescence.

Marijuana affects one’s IQ

There is now concrete evidence that young people are at risk of permanent damage if they are frequent marijuana users.  A recent study done with 1000 New Zealanders ranging from birth to 38 years old, found that those who started smoking marijuana in adolescence lost an average of eight IQ points later in life.
The study was done by researchers from Kings College London and Duke University in the United States. Participants were tested on their IQ at the age of 13 and 38 years along with their marijuana use. Those who fell on their IQ graph were those who smoked at least four days a week for part of those early years. Those who had never smoked marijuana until after the age of 20 were not affected by this loss.
What makes this result even more serious is that while tested marijuana smokers had quit the drug a considerable length of time before their second IQ test, their IQ scores did not increase. This is attributable to the fact that marijuana is stored in the fatty tissue of the body for a long time.

The report notes that a low IQ score is a strong determining factor in an individual's ability to access to higher education, produce lifetime income, and have better job opportunities as well as having a predisposition to the development of certain diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease or heart disease.
