This masterpiece from 1966 was banned in France for five years after its release and was not shown in Israel until 1975. It's fair to say that The Battle of Algiers has been both highly acclaimed and highly controversial. Set against the backdrop of France's long and cruel war against the people of Algeria, this film is both gripping and action-packed, and is supposed to have been a source of inspiration for many guerilla movements, including the Black Panthers, IRA and Kashmir Liberation Front. The soundtrack was produced by Ennio Morricone, and also sets this film apart. However The Battle of Algiers does not glorify violence, but instead raises interesting questions about the use of violence and strategies of resistance.

So come along to The Cowley Club, 12 London Road, Brighton next Wednesday at 7:30pm to enjoy this great anti-imperialist film and learn a little about Algeria's struggle for independence.
