AZ Knock Out: Day 5, Friday - Phone blockade

SHAC | 31.08.2012 09:56 | SHAC | Animal Liberation

Huntingdon Life Sciences is Europe's largest and most exposed animal testing laboratory. They kill 500 animals every day. AstraZeneca is one of HLS' top customers and pays them to torture animals in cruel and unnecessary experiments. Without customers HLS couldn't stay in business. So get angry, fight back and take down AstraZeneca!

ASTRAZENECA KNOCK OUT 27th-31st AUGUST
DAY 5: Friday - PHONE BLOCKADE

For day 5 we're going to finish off the week of action with another phone blockade - you can't beat 'em! In case you missed the phone blockade on day 2, the idea is that we all call them at the same time so they'll spend the entire day listening to us reminding them about the animals they're killing. Scummy companies that profit from animal abuse only care about money, so they're not going to be happy when their staff have to spend the day dealing with outraged activists rather than working.

Every 3 minutes another animal is tortured to death inside HLS. Every 3 minutes you spend on the phone will help to save them. Get dialling!

Today we're asking everyone to contact the first target, AstraZeneca's Global HQ, anytime between 10.30am-5pm. But we'll also be revealing some surprise targets to call later in the day too. We'll be calling these up until 11pm tonight. To find out who the next targets are you'll need to keep checking for updates. These will be posted on the event page on our website (www.shac.net/news/2012/august/31.html) and put on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

AstraZeneca have been under a lot of pressure this week, so let's turn up the heat for the final day! There will be a lot of protests taking place globally today (and most will be taking an unhappy AZ by surprise!), so let's make sure they have the maximum effect. We're going to make sure that these companies can't hide from the activists by cowering in their offices - we'll be asking everyone to phone them while the demos are taking place. The staff who work at these companies are happy to earn a living from the suffering of animals inside the hell hole Huntingdon Life Sciences, don't let them get away with it!

Between demos, keep calling our first target; AstraZeneca's Global HQ until 5pm.

>>>PHONE THESE NUMBERS<<<

10.30am-5pm
AstraZeneca
AZ Global HQ: 020 7304 5000 / 020 7604 8000
Freephone: 0800 032 0501
We're a little late releasing details of our first target, but we've received news that activists have just turned up at AZ's Global HQ in London! These numbers will be our main target throughout the day, but let's really focus the calls between 10.30-11.30am. AZ hate protesters turning up at this site, embarrassing them in front of their neighbours. Security here have even resorted to threatening peaceful activists and breaking their property - what do we do? We up our game and fight back even harder! Play your part and call the animal abusing thugs NOW!

More will be revealed soon, watch this space...

Still no security advice for participants?

some sound advice has been found

"Phone boxes are still a pretty good ways of making anonymous calls, though they do have pitfalls you need to be careful of. To avoid them we suggest the following guidelines:

1. The use of phone boxes should be varied as much as possible. If a phone box (or even several specific ones) becomes identified as one being regularly used by activists for communication then a camera may be put on it. People have been convicted as a result of this.

2. Use as far as possible from your house/office – cycling to other villages/estates is good.

3. Avoid areas were phones are likely to be already monitored, such as town centres where there is already much CCTV or areas of high drug dealing. A simple bug scanner will often pick up if there is a camera monitoring it by picking up on the camera’s transmissions back to base.

4. Wear baseball caps & non‐distinctive clothing. Keep your head down. If you can, slip a mask up on (in case of pinhole cameras in the phone box), put not at the expense of making you stand out to passers‐by.

5. Use gloves to handle the receiver and depending on what you are saying, consider putting a clean cloth over the microphone part to stop leaving traces of spit, and to disguise the voice.

6. Phone box to phone box calls are not secure; in fact they are seen as a trigger for state monitoring.

7. Phones in hotels, bars, etc are also useful sources to make phone calls from.

In the UK it is possible to type in 141 before dialling the number for your call. In theory will anonymize your call so that the person at the other end cannot see the number. This is no longer always the case with the introduction of new technology to defeat nuisance calls. However, for many numbers, especially ones not commonly targeted it will still work.

It should not been seen as a measure guaranteeing security but as adding an extra layer of security. For actions we do not recommend this approach as you should not be doing stuff from your home phone line at all, but if your level of risk is very low then you can consider this approach. Otherwise, this should not be crossing your mind.

It may be more applicable if you are doing campaign administration stuff rather than actions, though in this case you should consider a system where your phone number is automatically blocked."
