All out on the streets

Cyclist | 02.08.2012 00:39 | Climate Chaos | World

Half moon Critical Mass

This is a mid month Critical Mass to show solidarity with the cyclist killed on the road on 1st August by an Olympic bus. The headlines continuely ignored the death and concentrated on the gold medals-particulary the one won by British cyclist Bradley Wiggins. All cyclists including Olympians, are invited to join us as well as wheelchairers, skateboarders, roller bladers, roller skaters and other self-propelled people.. This Critical Mass will be huge - spread the word.

Bad Idea + Bad Media

02.08.2012 22:07

1) Why this is a bad idea:
 http://www.lfgss.com/thread90573.html

2) Wiggo seems to have been mis-quoted - usual media + distortion.
 http://twitter.com/bradwiggins
"Just to confirm I haven't called for helmets to be made the law as reports suggest"
"I suggested it may be the way to go to give cyclists more protection legally I involved In an accident"
"I wasn't on me soap box CALLING, was asked what I thought"

2b) Mark Cavendish also has video here;

Again what he says is mis-interpreted.

The lads are barely coherent.
In the immediate aftermath and emotional turmoil of going from victory to tragedy, it is unfair of the press (or Critical Mass) to try to make political capital from a death.

Better to calmly reflect and plan a considered reaction.

React to this ?

Only Me

this is ludicrous

wiggins was asked what he thought about helmets so said what he thought - that they probably should be mandatory. he has repeatedly stated since then he was not calling for a new law just stating his opinion when asked for it.

i don't see how a helmet would help a cyclist being ploughed into by a bus.

on a more general level, all this helmet stuff puts the responsibility on cyclists to keep themselves safe when hit by vehicles, ignoring the responsibility of drivers to respect cyclists in london and elsewhere and not recklessly endanger their lives as a large proportion of drivers frequently do.
