Demo and blockade against G4S in Stockholm

Tuesday 19th June saw a demonstration against G4S in the Kungsholmen district, where about 100 people attended, a demand letter was handed over and hundreds of flyers were distributed to the public. There was also a blockade outside G4S garage to prevent the company's cars to drive into and out of the building.

The protest was directed against G4S, who are involved in maintaining the occupation of Palestine and actively works for the deportation of people the state considers to be undesirable.

An international campaign against G4S has been started, but to pay particular attention to their behaviour, we chose to conduct a protest during the No Border Stockholm.

G4S is a leading multinational company focused on security and making money. G4S guards the Palestinian prisoners, in violation of international law, who are detained in prisons in Israel.

The company also has security guards in shops and banks in illegal Israeli settlements, and sells monitoring systems for private homes, prisons, police and checkpoints in the West Bank.

Management announced in 2002 that they planned to withdraw from contracts that are not in accordance with company policy. Ten years later, they still support crimes under international law in Palestine.

The company runs prisons in the United States, security and military tasks in Iraq, border controls in several countries and private asylum accommodation including in the UK. Criticism ranges from violations of human rights, abuse and harassment in detention and during transport. No one has been held accountable for the fatal beating of Jimmy Mubenga that occurred during a deportation in 2010. G4S are hired to enforce deportations in Britain, for example, and Holland.

An international campaign with Swedish branches has been launched to prevent G4S being rewarded with public monitoring services. The campaign has begun to bear fruit. Parliament chose for example not to renew their contract with G4S, upon the demand of 28 MPs. Some places in Stockholm are guarded by G4S in the Reichstag, the Stockholm County hospitals and soon Friends arena.

In Malmo, the red-green majority decided to write to the company and question their activities in the occupied Palestinian territory.
