Nestled alongside the Magna Carta Memorial, built to commemorate signing of the Magna Carta in 1215 and the magnificent RAF War Memorial we came across the Diggers 2012 encampment. Both the Magna Carta and War Memorial on monuments to the rights of the common people in both were erected to symbolise triumphs over tyranny. In case of the Magna Carta and the tyranny and oppressive taxation by King John of Robin Hood fame, the signing of the Magna Carta prevented civil war. And in the case of the RAF Memorial the memory of those who lost their lives in order to save us from Nazi fascism. It is also home to the JFK Memorial and the foundation stone of the American Constitution.

." The key principle was that no citizen could be imprisoned or outlawed without a lawful judgment being made against stated laws of the land."

This principle was to be the cornerstone of human rights for the next 800 years. I wonder what Robin Hood would have made of Guantanomo Bay.

The 2012 Digger are following in the footsteps of the 17th-century diggers , who set out to cultivate waste land by the common people in nearby Cobham. Of course things are a little different the 21st-century diggers, land which once was common land is now owned by invisible real estate investors and corporations. England's once green and pleasant land the fertile soil that enabled our war veterans to dig their way to victory against is now at the mercy of corporate moneyman and global bankers. Our once sovereign state now controlled by European laws and bankers having absolute control over of farmers.

In the 21st-century rather than living sustainability from the resources that surrounds us we have become tied into a global recipe for disaster. For the 2012 diggers living off of otherwise untilised fertile land has become an act of revolution. The land which they are living off once owned by the people has been lying dormant for 4 years what was once one of Britains leading engennering and training establishments became a pawn in a game of property specultion & liquidation. Sold to coporations with overspeculted bank loans they could not afford and pushing the local university out in order to build vast unsutainble developments.

For our urban 2012 diggers in the media age of wars on terror and Middle Eastern mayhem that far surpasses that of the mediaeval crusades, to live in peace on piece of land which has not been in use for four years has become an act of revolution
