Washington Arming Syrian Insurgents

Stephen Lendman | 19.06.2012 10:50 | Cambridge

It's no surprise. It's an open secret. It's been ongoing since early last year directly and/or indirectly. Rhetorically supporting peace while waging war exposes Washington's transparent hypocrisy. On June 15, the UK Daily Telegraph headlined "US holds high-level talks with Syrian rebels seeking weapons in Washington," saying: In the past week, a Free Syrian Army (FSA) representative met with outgoing Syrian ambassador Robert Ford and special Syrian coordinator Frederick Hof at the State Department.

Meetings with senior National Security Council officials were also held.

FSA members want heavy weapons. They include anti-tank missiles and heavy machine guns.

"(T)he Daily Telegraph has learned that advanced contingency plans are already in place to supply heavy weapons to the rebels, including sophisticated anti-tank weapons and surface to-air-missiles."

Plans may crystallize at the upcoming June 30 Geneva Friends of Syria meeting. The June 18-19 Los Cabos, Mexico summit will focus more on Eurozone economic crisis conditions.

Syria discussions won't change Russian and Chinese opposition to military intervention.

Nonetheless, Obama and Putin will hold bilateral talks. It'll be their first meeting since Putin's reelection. Obama will also meet privately with Chinese President Hu Jintao. Expect no Syrian breakthroughs.

Unnamed "(s)enior Middle East diplomatic sources" said large insurgent weapons supplies are already stockpiled. "(I)nevitable" intervention is coming. At issue is toppling Assad. One unnamed source said:

It "will happen. It is not a question of 'if,' but 'when.' "

"Middle Eastern diplomatic sources said that the Obama administration was fully aware of the preparations being made to arm Syrian opposition groups."

"The US has also agreed to be part of a group of countries that coordinates assistance to the rebels, the sources said, but was still deliberating over the time frame for escalation."

On June 16, DEBKAfile said Washington "is very near a decision on the types of weapons to be shipped to the Syrian rebels and when."

Most supplied are bought and paid for. Saudi Arabia and Qatar funds were used. "The White House is also close to deciding on the format of its military operation in Syria."

"Some sources" call it "Libya lite." It includes a no-fly zone. It also involves "direct air and other strikes...."

If implemented, expect full-scale war. Washington always resolves issues this way when other interventionist measures fail. .......... M O R E:  http://www.indymedia.org/de/2012/06/957454.shtml

19.06.2012 11:01

When will you people understand that our fight against the Assad regime is a just cause - we are fighting for freedom and democracy! The Syrian revolution has taken place as a long-delayed response to the misery and helplessness visited upon the Syrian people by a narrow authoritarian clique that treated the country as its own private fiefdom. Our uprising is a genuine fight against tyranny! Please, please, please stop trying to claim it is all the work of the USA or other western forces. Those western countries have given us people in the Syrian resistance no help at all and have left us to fend for ourselves. If you want to know the truth about the situation in our country them please come to Syria to see the situation first hand for yourselves.

Don't worry mate, most of us know that this is a genuine uprising by the Syrian people. Unfortunatley, there is a small but vocal group of nutters (the same nutters who hold Gadaffi up as some sort of anti-imperialist hero) who believe that the Syrian regime is acceptable. I suspect they are mostly members of dying communist parties who support Assad just because of Russias historic support for the Syrian regime.

Victory to the people's revolution!!

A just cause ?

19.06.2012 12:32

I think not. In common with many of the conflicts in the Middle East over the past 70 years there are two key countries responsible, the USA and Israel.

Israel is destabilising Syria via false flag attacks including murders and America is paying the bills for them to do it. Assad is a popular and well liked leader in Syria with support throughout the Arab world for his resistance to the 'Greater Israel' project. Soon we will see the truth of how hundreds have died as a result of Jerusalem once again meddling to prop up their illegal country.

Question

Aiding and abetting terrorism is an international crime

19.06.2012 16:42

The unrest led by the Syrian rebels is creating an extremely hazardous international situation.

As breaking the peace between former European colonizers and former Asian colonized nations - between Muslim and non-Muslim countries, -it could in fact spark a World War.

In Syria's Constitution, the country's independence, the secular state and basic framework for economic development are enshrined.

These basic principles are foundations of the civil rights of the citizens, and irrespective of details of governance, an invasion by any foreign power would deprive the citizens of civil rights, livelihood, property and equality of different faiths before the law.

The state is therefore fully entitled to defend itself.

The rebels are concentrated about the banned Syrian Muslim Brotherhood - which in the 1980s was responsible for hundreds of victims in terrorist assasinations.

Since Spring 2011, the so-called "Observatory of Human rights" (An offshot of the Muslim Brotherhood) has been issuing mendacious press releases - initially claiming to represent "peaceful demonstrators - while actually resuming the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist strategy of the 1980s, of targeting public employees, buildings, police, military, university people and intellectuals.

In June 3-6 2011, an ambush by approximately 400 fighters, partly coming across the border from Turkey, took place against military and police in Jisr Al-Shougur, leading to about 120 victims.

Initially, the "Observatory" claimed that the victims had been "executed for insubordination" by the Army.

But when the corpses were found, they were maimed, with throats, hands and feet cut off, in a way hardly practised by a regular Army.

This news was brought by Russian, Iranian and Chinese channels.

Arabic and Western media were also present - but hushed up the incident.

This hushup of the actual deeds of the terrorists continues till today.

In July, the rebels led a lynch regime of arbitrary killings in Hama.

From September-October 2011, fighters moved into Homs, carrying out attacks against civilians and authorities alike, including kidnappings, leading to hundreds of victims.

After they were driven out of Bab Amro March 2012, they carried out reprisal massacres in Homs of hundreds of people.

They usually hold local civilians as hostages or "human shields", to prevent attacks.

When the rebels have to retreat, they often commit massacres and blame it on the Syrian Government.

All of this has taken place under supervision by US private "security corporations" (actually organized crime corporations).

"Mossad, CIA, Blackwater led operations in Homs":

 http://www3.almanar.com.lb/english/adetails.php?eid=47719&cid=23&fromval=1

During the presence of the UN observers , they regrouped , carrying out further attacks against civilians in Houla and Qubeir.

Mounting criticism from the population, demanding a harder line from the Army, finally led to the retaking of rebel strongholds in June.

By 10-15.6 , they were expelled from the town of Haffeh, where they had trapped the population as hostages.

Locals were forced to participate in demonstrations:

 http://www.presstv.ir/detail/2012/06/19/246877/armed-gangs-force-syrians-to-protest/

The nationality of the prisoners shows the US/Saudi/Qatari hand in the campaign.

Hundreds of prisoners are non-Syrians, many trained by private "security companies":

A former Guantanamo prisoner - released on condition of working for a "security company" - was a cell coordinator and arranger of car bombings:

"Salaf was released from Guantanamo after signing a contract with a private US security service, due to a Homeland 2008 Program; Salaf received his first training in the US, then arrived in Tunisia in 2010, where his education was finalized and put to service by a retired Egyptian colonel.

 http://www.rt.com/news/syria-raids-terror-networks-870/

"Sources say at least 200-300 private security company employees are captured beside hundreds of foreign military and service personnel during the last 14 months of foreign terror provocation.

Among them are Portuguese nationals, who are paratroopers – and about whom Syria is asking itself how they entered the country.

Also 40-60 Germans are in Syrian custody, said the officials.

According to these sources, the Germans were caught red-handed on the Syrian coastline as they were smuggling weapons supplies for the insurgents into Syria."

This, in effect, makes it a foreign military invasion, justifying a miliktary response.

Boiling water in a sealed pot.

It should be obvious to most (unfortunately not the pro-government loons above) that Israel and Washington have a vested interest in propping up the Syrian resistance because it acts as a lever for military action against Iran over its nuclear program. The Iran nuclear talks going on over the last few months are a part of what is going on in Syria. There is no real intention to topple Assad, just an attempt to keep Syria in turmoil should war with Iran suddenly become likely. Iran can hardly use Syria as a proxy if it is in turmoil now can it?

The US, the UK and Israel are the offenders here along with Russia. They are collectively acting to keep Syria carefully balanced on the fulcrum of conflict as a negotiating measure over Irans nuclear program. They have no choice but to do this because they are petrified that another war in the region will split their political hold at home and wipe their powerhouses out for good. This is very likely...at the moment the autonomati are something close to a superpower in terms of direct influence. The US, UK and Russia are terrified of us now, and rightly so.

For those who feel that Israel plays no part in this I can only say go back to Jerusalem where you belong. Your politics are for the tinpot silver foil hat wearing brigade. This is a game for adults, not kiddywinks. Your biggest problem right now is not what will happen if Iran gets the bomb...but what will happen to you if it doesn't!!!

You have no friends in this world...and no friends means certain death!

That's nice but very naive.

The SFA simply do not have the population behind them. The vast majority of Syrians support Assad so at best you have in Syria a deadlock of armed groups searching for that one trigger that will sweep Assad away. But that won't happen because without the support of the Syrian people, they have nothing to govern. The British, Americans, Israeli's and Russians know this and are using the SFA's inherent weakness to first ensure that the conflict continues and second to ensure that it continues long enough for pressure to be applied to Iran.

When the Iran situation is dealt with, the SFA will be abandoned and will die a natural death because it is not strong enough to actually seize power.

The Syrian Free Army are nothing more than patsy's and plastic revolutionaries. They are strongly pro-Israel and strongly pro-US.

We have no reason to support them.

How very convenient for you, "stepping back" into the safety of your Western Imperialist, warm safe home.

In case you had not worked it out on the one side we have a popular uprising armed with 30 year old unreliable AK47's and a few trucks

and on the other

A well trained, well equipped modern Army, Navy and Air Force of 646,500 personnel armed with Mi-8 Hip Attack Helicopters, MiG-29SMT fighters, Pantsir S1E air-defense systems, Iskander tactical missile systems, Yak-130 aircraft, and two Amur-1650 submarines from Russia as well as about 750,000 Type 47 rifles supplied by the Russians over the past five years.

Do you think that's a fair fight or is perhaps morally responsible for some outside countries to come to the aid of them ?

And what exactly is the FSA's stance on Israel?

It is pretty obvious that intervention in Syria and the toppling of Assad seriously helps Israel at a time when it has no friends in the region. The above poster outlines the situation in Syria as taking place at exactly the moment that Israel is trying to ratchet up war with Iran.
