Anti fascists attacked in Hebden Bridge

Yesterday around 30 EDL thugs descended on Hebden Bridge after the Rochdale demo. They

draped their banners outside the shoulder of mutton pub and began to chant anti Islamic abuse.

Some local anti fascists attempted to confront the group but they were threatened by EDL supporters. The police had no control over the situation and were simply a laughing stock. One of the EDL began arguing with a local anti fascist when the EDL supporter punched the anti fascist in the face. The fascist friendly police put the thug in the back of the van and gave him a caution and then allowed him to walk off.

The EDL displayed placards against Islam, even though there are no muslims in Hebden Bridge, this entire depressing fiasco was clearly an attack on anti fascists and nothing to do with radical islam. As we walked past the EDL we were verbally abused and called "traitors" eventually the group left and went back to the station, the thugs that carried out the attack were from Halifax and leeds.

Imagine if it was anti-arms activists, animal lib, anti-cuts protesters et al just turning up randomly to hurt and abuse people .. the state would dole out very heavy sentences. There are a few major issues with this report;

A) As serious anti-fascists we shouldn't be reliant on the police to deal with EDL violence, and we shouldn't be moaning about the inactivity of the police. Opposition to the far-right needs to come from us, grassroots activists, not the state.

B) This also shows failure on the part of the anti-fascists. As ANTI-fascists we shouldn't be on the defensive, or allow anti-anti-fascism to set the agenda. We need to make sure that we aren't handing the far-right victories, and if things don't go our way we certainly shouldn't be moaning about how nasty and horrible the fascists are after.

The EDL/Casuals United/Infidels/NF are stepping up their activities against left-wing, anarchist and anti-fascist campaigners. Stalls, meetings and other events are being threatened or are coming under attack. We need to ensure that decent security is in place, or this sort of thing will only continue, handing easy, morale-boosting victories to them on a plate.
Intelligence gathering (such as monitoring their facebook pages/forums) can offer SOME prior warning of attacks, and scouts and a group of people acting as stewards (not always necessarily at the said event) with a plan of how to defend the event if the situation arises, can go a long way to deter or stop attacks, and defend comrades. It really isn't that hard, and it's something that is vital in the current climate.

Actually, we have the right to be protected by the police and need to demand that they take action. Most of us are normal people and don't want to have 'security' to exercise our democratic rights. This also puts people off being involved. Pressurising the police to do their job is the right approach.

Most people on indymedia agree representative democracy sucks compared to direct democracy, so lets campaign for direct democracy not run around causing more trouble for ourselves& others in a way thats cluiqey& looks undemocratic.
Pouring fuel on the sociopaths& feeding their trolls doesnt help, they need taking the piss out of in a non personal way that educates& riducules& or dealing with by health professionals ombination with the police were originally community watchmen&women& are bound to serve democracy&fair law, not any form of dictatorship.
Antifascists just turn up & look well organised non antogonistic with a GSOH,trolling& running after or bash the fash is random& in the long run helps no one, self defence is a last resort that we should be good at, I would happily help wrestle a sociopath to the ground if he was aggressive& get them in the hands of health services. My family included very active austrian antinazis&ukrainian-polish resistance who heavily resisted stalinists when they literally invaded, they went through the holodomor& the gulags, civil war isnt fun,lets not go there.
