I am writing to you after learning that Dalton Park Shopping Centre is hosting Zippos Circus.
Zippos forces animals to perform degrading and cruel tricks, and like many members of the UK public, I am against such acts of cruelty.
In fact, I am very surprised that you would want to publicly support such cruelty and align yourself with such acts, given that last year, Parliament voted unanimously to ban wild animals from circuses with the backing of 95% of the public.
Zippos Circus is actually listed by the UK charity, Captive Animals Protective Society, as one to boycott over concerns with animal welfare. I urge you to reconsider your position as a matter of urgency and follow many other land owners and councils who have banned animal circuses from their land.
If you wish to host a circus, there are plenty of very popular non animal circuses that could be used instead. Animals do not voluntarily ride bicycles, stand on their heads, balance on balls, or jump through rings of fire.
They do not perform these and other difficult tricks because they want to; they perform them because they are afraid of what will happen if they do not. For animals in circuses, there is no such thing as "positive reinforcement" only varying degrees of punishment and deprivation.
To force them to perform these meaningless and physically uncomfortable tricks, trainers use whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods, bullhooks, and other painful tools of the trade.
I find it absolutely disgusting that you would support such cruelty, and I am urging everyone to boycott your shopping centre until you decide to ban animal circuses from your land.
Yours faithfully,
