What If the Permafrost Thaws?

Alex Smith | 29.05.2012 21:53 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Sheffield

There is more carbon frozen in far North than in all living things & the atmosphere. It has begun to thaw. Interview with Prof. Antoni Lewkowicz and Academy of Science speech by Dr. Charles Koven of Berkeley Lab.

When we think of planet Earth, we don't picture a frozen planet. But a huge area underground is always icy. We call it the permafrost. You won't find it in your backyard, unless you live in the far north.

Geologists and other scientists have only begun the task of cataloging this underground world. Now, as Earth warms, we all need to know. Because if all the carbon locked up in the north is released, our climate, and our civilization will change beyond recognition.

Professor Antoni Lewkowicz is a central figure unraveling this mystery. From the Department of Geography at Canada's University of Ottawa, Lewkowicz studies, leads doctoral researchers, and advises international groups on permafrost. He's a co-author on a new paper on the impacts of climate change on permafrost in Canada.

Charles Koven from Berkeley National Labs is a climate expert on permafrost. He makes predictions from the best of the models we have so far. You get selections from his presentation at the AAAS meeting in Vancouver February 19, 2012.

Theme music for this program is Laurie Anderson "Only An Expert". Short clip from BBC and US Energy Secretary Steven Chu from You tube.

We could lose 50 to 80% of the permafrost this century. It could be a runaway greenhouse situation.

Could you please tell me

Do you believe that CO2 is harmful to our environment?

Because if so, this is a fundamental lie which has been pushed by people in high positions who stand to make a lot of money from carbon trading. A lie which has been picked up and and co-sponsored by the general scientific communitys concensus due to the fact that all the CLIMATE scientists wouldn't have a job, yet alone all the funding being thrown at this imaginary problem.

Please understand that the conversion of food into bio-fuel is insanely harmful to our brothers and sisters in other parts of the world. Anthropogenic global warming is as serious as Mr Blobby.

I wholeheartedly reject the idea that the very substance we breathe out is destroying the Earth. If you believe this, would it not be better of killing yourself to save the planet? I'm not saying do so! - only, following that train of logic, that's what you'd get to eventually, wouldn't you?

How can people not see that rich idiots such as Gore or Charles flying round the world in their private jets, all the time belching out crazily high levels of the very substance that they claim to be campaigning against. It's farcical.

If the permafrost melts,

... vast areas will be opened up for agriculture, mining and human habitation. Boom times for Russia and Canada, certainly.
