BAN MILITARY RECRUITMENT IN WELSH SCHOOLS -
LAUNCH OF PETITION TO BAN MILITARY RECRUITMENT IN WELSH SCHOOLS
Friday 1 June, 7 pm, Temple of Peace, Edward VII Avenue
Out of the 27 EU countries, the United Kingdom is the only one to recruit within schools.
How can such a morally indefensible practise not be contested?
Following last March's referendum to deliver greater legislative powers, and since education is one of the Assembly's areas of responsibility, there is good reason to raise the matter of MOD recruitment programs aimed at minors. Can Wales take a moral lead where England can't? If you're not old enough to vote, how can you be old enough to decide if you want to give your life?
Hosted by The United Nations Association Cardiff, there will be speeches from CND Wales, Cymdeithas y Cymod (The Fellowship of Reconciliation in Wales) and Plaid Cymru's Youth Wing.

Lying to children

I was subjected to militarist propaganda as a child and it is terrifying to think that this practice still continues. Children are told how wonderful it is to be in the forces, what an adventure it will be, and the armed services are presented as a kind of thunderbirds-like all conquering heroic team which solves all the world's problems. I have several former soldier friends who, now in their late 20s are like shells of people. They have been poisoned, physically damaged and psychologically destroyed, and the state offers them no support. They are unable to interact with society, keep a girlfriend, or a job etc.... their lives have been ruined.
Of course this tragedy is nothing compared to that inflicted by our "defense forces" against people such as the Iraqis, Afghans, Libyans, but nevertheless it is a tragedy and one that should not be forgotten.
Having met a lot of ex-servicemen (and women) I can say that I have nothing but sympathy for the majority of them, despite the horror of their war crimes and acts of terror.
I wish that we as a community of communities could provide better support to rehabilitate these poor unfortunates.
