Belarus Free Theatre is an underground theatre group, founded in 2005 as an artistic means of countering Government censorship and repression of freedom of speech. Audience members have been arrested, while actors have been subject to death threats and intimidation.
As a result the Theatre's founders have been forced to flee to the UK where they are now resident and manage to keep Belarus Free Theatre going.
Just last week special forces stormed a screening of "Europe's Last Dictator", organised by Belarus Free Theatre, in the outskirts of Minsk. The film, directed by Matthew Charles and narrated by Joanna Lumley draws attention to human rights abuses in the country. Audience members, including an underage girl, were interrogated, fingerprinted and photographed before being released three hours later.
Equity, the union for performers and creative workers and the International Committee for Artists Freedom object to theatre being used as a distraction from the horrific human rights abuses taking place in Belarus and have organised an audience education protest at the Bloomsbury Theatre.
What can you do?
Join the protest at the Bloomsbury Theatre and spread the work to fellow Equity members and friends.
