St. Andrews Queers show O'Brien their backsides

St. Andrews students protest O'Brien sermon at St. Salvators Church. Following O'Brien's recent comments his invitation to deliver a sermon was criticised by the Student Association and the LGBT Society organised a demonstration. Autonomous queers acted of their own accord and walked out of the sermon in protest.

When Cardinal O'Brien gave his comments to that great bastion of progressive values - The Daily Telegraph - he could offer nothing more than hatred and bigotry. As a celibate man, O'Brien argued that the sexual activities of the LGBTQ community were 'grotesque' and against 'natural law.' As an authoritarian and leader of a Church he stated that allowing same-sex marriage would be like legalising slavery.

There was, however, one comment by him that really inspired us regarding same-sex marriage:

''further aberrations would take place and society would be degenerating even further than it already has into immorality''

As queers, we understand what he calls aberrations as liberating, solidarious efforts. If same-sex marriage leads to sexual liberation, defence of the LGBTQ community, celebration of our culture and history, genderfucking, glam blocks, glitter bombs and a good session of scissoring then all the better. We really can't think of anything more fabulous.

So as queers we could not let O'Brien get through his day without being inconvenienced and shamed. It is for that reason that three humyns left their seats as he started to speak, turned our backs to him and walked out of the Church. It was, we imagine, yet another one of those toe-curling aberations.

We must also give our thanks to the beautiful people of the LGBT Society on campus who ensured we were not alone. Through their organising hundreds were made aware of O'Briens presence and today many of those showed up to demonstrate peacefully in the Church too. Sitting together to form on gorgeous bloc the folks of the LGBT Society formed the colours of the rainbow with their clothing. Those outside supported too with flags, smiles and yet more of those familiar rainbow hues.

O'Brien, we hope our aberations fulfilled your wildest dreams.

Out of the closets and onto the streets!

Yours,
