Amsterdam: The End of Legal Drugs

Alfie Crowther | 12.04.2012 16:10 | Culture | Social Struggles

The laws in The Netherlands are set to change, stopping visitors to the country from smoking weed legally.

Worries are arising about the future of the tourism industry in Amsterdam and the policy suggesting that only local residents will be able to buy the now legal substance will come into place in the countries capital from 2013.

The legalized drugs culture in The Netherlands unquestionably brings thousands of visitors to the streets of Amsterdam every year. The coalition government, of which The Netherlands always has, is clamping down on the industry to prevent drug related crime caused by tourists.

The capital which contains almost half of the countries 600 coffee shops is to see the legislation, which is already enforced in southern provinces come into play next year. The stipulations of the policy include:

• Coffee shops requiring a specific permit to sell weed.
• Only Dutch residents will be able to purchase weed.
• To purchase week one must become a member of that coffee shop.
• Illegal to sell weed to any non- Dutch resident.

The controversial plans are set to rock the city, along with the cheese, windmills and clogs the legal drug culture is a part of the Dutch DNA.

Been in decline for years

The whole 'coffee shop' scene has been in decline for years because the nice mellow stuff that used to be sold has been replaced by enhanced THC variants for the benefit of tourists who want a quick low cost high. In addition what was something mostly controlled by old style hippies is not more or less all run by the Moroccan Mafia with links to people trafficking and prostitution that of course results in police involvement.

They'll learn the hard way

The drugs are either gonna be just as easy to get hold of and people wiill still flock their the same as ever and buy their pot whilst the government gets none of that lovely revenue OR the tourism industry will just flop completely and they'll be screwed at a time when the economy's still fragile. I doubt this will last long, as the rest of the world looks to take the dutch model, the Dutch are taking the wrong model.

Against current EU laws to discriminate against any EU citizen anyhows ...

... besides, the people grow their own if they want ... can't arrest us all, fucked if they try.

Their laws are inadequate in the face of mass disobedience.

Will roll one up now just to prove it.
