Protest against HLS during boat race - massive publicity for cause

The boat race today was disrupted by Animal Rights activist "Tom" by swimming in front of the boats.


An incredibly brave protest ( he could have been killed ) the two boats only stopped rowing at the last moment seriously endangering Tom's life.

The police reaction was predictably over the top as the toffs days out was ruined and Tom was dragged away to a local nick.

After swimming to the shore where he unveiled a poster Tom was attacked by a number of upper class twits on the towpath, whe the police arrived we we pointed out the assault we were told, " he fucking deserved it mate". Demands to have the the perpetrators arrested were predictably ignored, the police of course being the protectors of the privileged elite.

Tom is now under arrest, we are trying to find out where the State are holding him.

I watched the race (knowing the protest was coming) and I could not believe how late the crews pulled their oars,it was clear Tom was in the water, he was shouting slogans and calling out that he was there despite that they carried on rowing right up to the last moment. Incredibly dangerous for him and a complete disregard for life, I hope the cox of the Oxford boat faces police action.

Despite the BBC being told just moments after the action what it was all about they have refused to say that this was an Anti HLS action describing Tom as a "swimmer". This refusal will be protested at BBC HQ tomorrow if they do not report the reason for the action.

How on earth does The Boat Race relate to Animal Rights in a way that justifies putting life at risk, as this protest did, and spoiling the race, which there is no need to characterise irrationally as a "toff's day out"? Protest is a justified form of expression but should be targeted fairly; destructive and misdirected protest of this kind is both damaging to the cause at hand and to society.

Great to see Toby showing how it should be done, I remember talking with him at a protest outside Astra Zenca last year, really committed guy. Yes his family is very rich but that should not matter if somebody is as committed as he is. Perhaps there were two people planning to swim this afternoon. But as an outsider I have no way of knowing whether the actual swimmer was the HLS protestor you claim it was or this other person.

Hey,

Who is deleting the comments from this list?

They have deleted the comments which are semi-supportive of protest but left the critical posts ..including the posts which have objectionable expletives.

How can it be Ok to use very rude four letter word in a comment? But it is not Ok to express some support for the right to protest?

We don't know the facts yet about this protest today - it would be nice to be able to find them out...so please stop deleting posts.

I saw the point of deleting earlier comments that alleged assault and others that called for violence, and even some of the abuse that followed in light of the content referencing violence especially, but a whole bunch of entirely legitimate comments have just been deleted in a second round of deletions. Whoever is doing this is undermining the credibility of this site; moderation should be about keeping the debate fair, not cleansing it of material you don't personally care for.
