A student who says he was racially abused by three men managed to drive past them in his car and take their photographs, police have said.

The 24-year-old man was in St Thomas Street, Portsmouth, on Tuesday when he was approached by three youths.

He said they shouted racial abuse at him before one of them hit him on his shoulder with a beer bottle. He got into his car, photographed the men before one of them smashed his car window with a beer bottle, police said.

Pc Dan Neligan, from Hampshire police, added: "This was a vicious, unprovoked attack on a young man which could have resulted in a serious injury.

"As part of my investigation, I'd like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or recognises the three youths."

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact Portsmouth CID at Fratton police station by phoning 101. Mini-com users can phone 01962 875000. Information can be given anonymously by phoning the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
