Nottingham Indymedia skill shares

nottingham[at]indymedia[dot]org (Nottingham Indy) | 12.03.2012 10:55 | Indymedia

Next Saturday (17th March), Nottingham Indymedia will be hosting two skill share sessions looking at Online Security (2pm) and giving an Introduction to Indymedia (4pm). The sessions will take place at the Sumac Centre in Forest Fields.

Computers and the internet are amazing tools that have revolutionised the way that people spread information for action. However, the ease with which they allow information to be shared has also meant it is becoming increasingly easy for that information to get into the wrong hands. Individuals and campaigns that use these tools open themselves up to the risk that personal and private campaign information can be used by the state and their opponents to render them ineffective.

There is always a risk that this might happen, but learning to use some simple basic security measures will help to give you some protection. The Nottingham Indymedia skill share will investigate what risks using the internet might pose, from who, and cover some basic ideas and tools that you can use to lower those risks. We hope to look at proprietary vs. open source software, data ownership on the internet, social networking, protecting your IP address and file encryption.

We will also be introducing websites with good privacy and security measures that can be used as alternatives to some of the notorious corporate internet giants. In particular, we will be introducing the global Indymedia network and our own website, Nottingham Indymedia. This will be an opportunity to learn how to publish news and events, create an account or a group and contribute to the local Indymedia collective.

These skill shares are an opportunity for beginners to come and have their questions answered but we also welcome those with more advanced techincal knowledge to contribute. All levels of expertise are very welcome.

Sat 17th March @ Sumac Centre, 245 Gladstone Streets, Forest Fields, Nottingham
