Start Page Proxy

One of the great things about Start Page is its stated privacy policy and quick access to its own proxy. There's an explanation of that here:  https://startpage.com/proxy/eng/help.html

Don't trust a single point of failure

IMHO it is foolish to trust a single point of failure like any of these search engines. How do you know they don't secretly log everything? Most of them just pass on the query to Google anyway so a) Google can block them any time they want and b) Google will log the searches and the government can easily log traffic to the supposedly secure search websites and match them up by time.

If you want a secure search use Tor with a search engine like Google.

Use Firefox with Torbutton, which handles the potential pitfalls with Tor:
 https://www.torproject.org/torbutton/

It is slow, but it has to be otherwise traffic analysis can match up searches.

ddg for everyday use, tor + whatever if you really care

ddg.gg addresses the problem of routine profiling by advertisers etc, tor (somewhat) addresses the issue of anonymization if you really don't want to get caught doing something online.
