Illicit Drug  Trade:A Shared Problem.
A Shared Solution Is Found.

Drug trafficking, drug abuse, violence, crime all are problems and have been around for a long time, and has caused disaster in every country of the world.

Not only is there the problem of drug trafficking  but the tragedy of teens and children who have gotten taken in by peers, and those who sold the drugs, and have been the victims of death, addiction, and violence.

Mexico is the main supply route for cocaine and other illegal drugs entering the United States and Canada, Colombia being the main cocaine producer.
Historically, Colombian cartels have dominated cocaine trafficking. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Colombia’s Pablo Escobar , a Columbian Drug Lord was the main exporter of cocaine and dealt with organized criminal networks all over the world. When enforcement efforts intensified in South Florida and the Caribbean, the Colombian organizations formed partnerships with the Mexico-based traffickers to transport cocaine through Mexico into the United States. This was easily accomplished because Mexico had long been a major source of heroin and marijuana, and drug traffickers from Mexico had already established an infrastructure that stood ready to serve the Colombia-based traffickers. By the mid-1980s, the organizations from Mexico were well established and reliable transporters of Colombian cocaine.

In March 2009, President Calderón called in an additional 5000 Mexican Army troops to Ciudad Juárez. The United States Department of Homeland Security has also said that it is considering using the National Guard as a last resort to counter the threat of drug violence in Mexico from spilling over the border into the US. The governors of Arizona and Texas have asked the federal government to send additional National Guard troops to help those already there supporting local law enforcement efforts against drug trafficking.

According to the National Drug Intelligence Center, Mexican cartels are the predominant smugglers and wholesale distributors of South American cocaine and Mexico-produced marijuana, methamphetamine and heroin. Mexico's cartels have existed for some time, but have become increasingly powerful in recent years with the demise of the Medellín and Cali cartels in Colombia. Closure of the cocaine trafficking route through Florida also pushed cocaine traffic to Mexico, increasing the role of Mexican cartels in cocaine trafficking. The Mexican cartels are expanding their control over the distribution of these drugs in areas controlled by Colombian and Dominican criminal groups, and now believed to include most of the U.S.A.

The U.S. Justice Department considers the Mexican drug cartels as the greatest organized crime threat to the United States.  During the first 18 months of Calderón's presidency, the Mexican government has spent about $7 billion USD in the war against drugs. In seeking partnership from the United States, Mexican officials point out that the illicit drug trade is a shared problem in need of a shared solution, and remark that most of the financing for the Mexican traffickers comes from American drug consumers.

Multiple researchers propose focusing on prevention, treatment and education programs to curb demand rather than the continued support of combating the supply of drugs. Studies show that military interdiction efforts fail because they ignore the root cause of the problem: U.S. demand.

Good News

Now we are tackling the root cause of the problem, and with success. See below:

"The Truth About Drugs Education Campaign"  is an anti-drug initiative sponsored by the Church of Scientology.  It offers hope and help to the world-wide tragedy of drug abuse. This campaign is the largest information and prevention, non-government on  earth

Nothing is printed consisting of the beliefs or advocates the beliefs of the Scientology Religion.

There are 10 educational booklets beginning with " The Truth About Drugs"  The contents of these are facts about the drugs, one by one, which tells the truth about the   harmful effects that occur from each drug. Every drug of choice from marijuana to methamphetamine is covered. The information on how these drugs damage the human mind and the body.

There are also The Truth About Drugs information activation kits which are mailed to anti-drugs entities such as health education departments, law enforcement agencies, and federal programs which are similarly aimed.

Broad distribution is one of the campaign's main activities. Throughout in cities in North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia 450,000 booklets were put out in one week-end with coincident drops in teen usage rates in these nations from the USA to Germany and France. Last year, the total people that were presented with The Truth About Drugs, was over 20 million.

Fundamental to the continuing success of this campaign is that the youth are not preached to or spoken to in a didactic way.   They are spoken to in their own language. Also the youth hear ex-users of the drugs, and the horror they experienced on the Public Service Advertisements that are showing on TV now.   They lived to tell about it, and can educate other kids on the real truth.

The Foundation for a Drug Free World is actively involved in education programs in schools and in the community. The program is mainly addressed to youth.

By giving the truth about drugs anyone can help others to make informed decision to live a drug free life.
