A couple drunkenly tried to stab their emaciated dog to death and bury him in a shallow grave.

Richard Haw, 46, knifed Staffordshire bull terrier Scooby four times while his partner Michelle Krivenes, 42, dug the hole in the garden.

Police found blood leading out from the kitchen to where the half-starved pet was shaking and in pain. He had to be put down by a vet.

Gregg Cross, defending, told magistrates Scooby was ill and had lost weight, so the pair thought it best to put him down.

He said: “They made a terrible decision in the way they went about it.”

The couple, of Wakefield, West Yorks, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

They were given suspended 12-week jail terms, 200 hours’ unpaid work and an indefinite ban on keeping animals.
